On Saturday evening, a significant number of Android users encountered persistent crashes with the Google app, receiving the message “Google keeps stopping” while attempting to conduct searches. Reports of this disruption began to surface as users tried to access the app, only to be redirected back to their home screens shortly after launching it.

Update: As of approximately 11:00 PM PT, the Google app has resumed functionality for some users. The company officially acknowledged the service disruption at 23:07 PT, stating, “There’s an ongoing issue with serving in Google Search that’s affecting a large number of users searching on the Google app on Android. We’re working on identifying the root cause. Next update will be within 12 hours.”

Impact on Users

Users attempting to open the Google app via the home screen icon experienced immediate crashes, with the app briefly loading before reverting to the home screen. The Google Search bar widget displayed past queries momentarily before also crashing. While the Pixel Launcher search bar remained functional for device lookups, entering a search query led to a similar crash. Furthermore, Google Discover, located to the left of the home screen, failed to launch, and tapping the Voice Search microphone resulted in the same outcome.

After multiple attempts to launch the app, users were met with the frustrating “Google keeps stopping” notification. This issue appeared to affect various Android versions, including the latest stable (15.35) and beta (15.36) releases, impacting devices such as Google Pixel and Samsung Galaxy.

Services Unaffected

Despite the challenges with the Google app, other services like Google Assistant, Gemini, Google Lens, and Circle to Search continued to operate smoothly. Users could also access google.com through Chrome for Android as a workaround. Notably, this disruption seems confined to the Google app on Android, with no reported issues on other platforms. All first-party services, including YouTube, Gmail, Drive, and Docs, remained fully operational as of late Saturday evening.

Google Keeps Stopping/Crashing Workarounds

While there is currently no clear fix for the app crashes, users can still access Google services through Chrome and other mobile browsers. Unfortunately, older versions of the Google app are also affected, making it impossible to revert to previous updates without encountering additional complications.
