Nova Launcher Faces New Competition Amid Branch Layoffs

Many enthusiasts have long hailed Nova Launcher as a premier app launcher for Android devices. However, recent developments have raised concerns among its user base. Following its acquisition by analytics firm Branch in 2022, the app faced a wave of discontent, leading to a decline in its loyal following. This sentiment has somewhat softened over time, but the announcement of significant layoffs at Branch in August 2024 has left many users searching for alternatives. In light of this, a new contender has emerged in the form of Kvaesitso, which is quickly gaining traction as a worthy substitute.

Kvaesitso: A Minimalist Approach to Android Launchers

Having once been a devoted Nova Launcher user, I have recently explored various Android launchers and found Kvaesitso to be my standout favorite. This open-source launcher has transformed my experience on my aging flagship phone, and I anticipate it will be a staple on my future devices as well. Unlike Nova, which caters to users who thrive on extensive customization and multiple home screens, Kvaesitso embraces a more minimalist approach. Its initial screen is refreshingly uncluttered, showcasing the current wallpaper with just a clock widget and a search bar to break the tranquility.

Kvaesitso departs from Nova’s multi-page layout, opting instead for a single vertical scrolling page. Initially, this shift was challenging, as I had grown accustomed to filling Nova with numerous apps and folders. However, Kvaesitso’s streamlined design presents information in a more organized manner, enhancing the overall user experience. The launcher intelligently tracks frequently used apps, presenting them in a convenient favorites widget at the top of the scrolling page. Instead of traditional folders, Kvaesitso employs a tagging system that reduces visual clutter and simplifies app searches.

Accessing a more extensive app list is as simple as swiping down, with customizable gestures available for those who prefer alternative methods. Kvaesitso also allows for various actions through long presses or double taps, offering flexibility for users who enjoy such features. While widgets are still part of the experience, their presentation differs significantly from Nova’s approach. Instead of dedicating multiple pages to widgets, Kvaesitso organizes them vertically on a single page, making it easier to access all information with a quick thumb movement.

For those who prefer a curated selection of widgets, Kvaesitso provides several built-in options that align with its aesthetic. The weather widget is particularly appealing, and the media widget accommodates various players, while the calendar and note widgets serve as excellent tools for quick references. In terms of search capabilities, Kvaesitso rivals Nova by offering robust global search functions, allowing users to find contacts, files, calendar events, and even perform web searches directly from the home screen.

Drawbacks and Considerations

Despite its many advantages, Kvaesitso does have some drawbacks. The launcher is not available on the Play Store, which may pose challenges for less tech-savvy users. Additionally, keeping the app updated requires sourcing it from platforms like F-Droid or Obtanium, which may not suit everyone’s preferences. Its design philosophy also limits customization options compared to Nova, particularly regarding KWGT widgets, which lose some of their impact in Kvaesitso.

While some may not view Kvaesitso as a suitable alternative to Nova Launcher, my experience over the past few months has convinced me otherwise. With Kvaesitso being free to use, it is certainly worth exploring, especially when considering the premium costs associated with Nova’s Prime unlock.

Exploring Other Alternatives

If Kvaesitso or Nova Launcher doesn’t meet your needs, there are several other noteworthy Android launcher alternatives to consider:

  • Apex Launcher: Known for its balance between customization and performance.
  • Action Launcher: Offers unique features like Covers and Shutters.
  • Microsoft Launcher: Integrates seamlessly with Microsoft services and offers robust productivity tools.
  • Lawnchair: An open-source option that closely mimics the Pixel Launcher experience.

The landscape of Android launchers is rich with options, ensuring that every user can find a solution tailored to their specific needs and preferences.
