Crunchyroll and A PLUS Japan Announce Global Release of Lord of Nazarick RPG

Crunchyroll and A PLUS Japan have unveiled plans to launch the highly anticipated Lord of Nazarick turn-based role-playing game, based on Kugane Murayama’s Overlord series. The game is set to be available globally on iOS and Android devices this fall, with preregistration already open. This new release marks a significant milestone as it will be the first game to fully integrate the Crunchyroll Log feature, offering exclusive rewards to Crunchyroll Premium members.

According to Crunchyroll, the game follows the story of Momonga, who, after twelve years of playing his favorite MMORPG, finds himself transported into its world indefinitely. As his avatar, Sorcerer King Ainz Ooal Gown, players will navigate a rich narrative filled with over 50 characters from the anime, roguelite dungeons, bosses, minigames, and stunning 3D visuals. The game also includes co-op play with alliances and PVP modes, adding layers of strategy and community engagement.

In conjunction with the game release, Crunchyroll has announced North American screenings of Overlord: The Sacred Kingdom (Gekijō-ban Overlord Sei Ōkoku-hen), a new film project for the Overlord anime. Screenings will commence on November 8 across North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and Latin America. The film had its IMAX debut in Japan on September 13, followed by regular screenings starting this Friday.

Expanding the Overlord Universe

The Overlord franchise continues to grow with various adaptations and releases. In June 2022, Kadokawa Corporation and developer Engines launched the Overlord -Escape from Nazarick- game for Nintendo Switch and PC via Steam. This 2D action-adventure “Metroidvania”-style game features Clementine, voiced by Aoi Yūki, navigating the Great Tomb of Nazarick. Players start unarmed with amnesia but can regain Clementine's weapons and powers through martial arts, magic, and parkour as they progress.

The Overlord anime series has also seen considerable success since its debut. The first 13-episode series premiered in Japan in July 2015 and was streamed by Funimation with an English dub released on Blu-ray Disc and DVD in November 2016. The second series aired from January to April 2018, followed by a third series in July 2018. Both were streamed by Crunchyroll and dubbed by Funimation. The fourth season premiered in July 2022, continuing the trend of simultaneous streaming and dubbing.

This ongoing expansion of the Overlord universe through games and films underscores the franchise's enduring popularity and the strategic efforts by Crunchyroll and Kadokawa Corporation to engage fans across multiple platforms.
