Spotify has recently made a change to its Android app icon, reverting back to a more traditional look. The update, which is part of version 8.9.44.368, removes the black border that was added to the icon five years ago.
Previously, the Spotify icon on Android featured the logo within a circle. However, in 2019, a black border was added to accommodate adaptive icons that could change shape. This change caused some issues for users with devices that used circular icons, making the Spotify icon look out of place.
Reverting to Tradition
With the latest update, Spotify has decided to go back to the original design, removing the black border. The new icon now fits better on devices with circular icons, like Pixel, but may not look as seamless on devices with different icon shapes.
It’s worth noting that the change only applies to devices with circular icons. Devices with other icon shapes will still display the icon with the black border. Additionally, Spotify has since reverted back to the old icon design with the latest update, v8.9.46.426.
Implications and Reactions
While the new design may be more appealing to most users, there are still some issues to be ironed out. It will be interesting to see how other music streaming services, like YouTube Music, respond to these changes.
