Google has announced that it will be discontinuing its PDF scanner app Stack in the week of September 23, 2024. The decision to remove support for the app was made as much of its functionality has already been integrated into Google Drive.

Migrating Documents to Google Drive

If you are a user of Stack and use it to organize your PDF documents, Google has provided a tool that allows you to easily migrate all your documents to Google Drive. To access this tool, simply go to Account > Settings > Export all documents to Drive within the Stack app.

The documents that are exported to Google Drive will appear in a green folder labeled “Stack” in the My Drive section. Additionally, individual documents can be exported by tapping on the Share button after opening a document in the app.

The Journey of Stack

Launched in 2021, Stack was developed as an experimental app for Android by Google’s Area 120 incubator and Google Cloud’s DocAI team. The app allowed users to scan documents, automatically name them, and suggest categories or “stacks” to organize them into.

Stack is the latest addition to the list of Google apps and services that are being discontinued. The Podcasts app was recently shut down, with users being directed to listen to podcasts via YouTube Music. Additionally, the Followed Places feature in the Google Maps app may also have a limited time left, as indicated by a recent beta version.
