Thousands of account holders with the three major banks have reported issues this morning on Downdetector and social media. The banking issues have caused quite a stir, with many customers expressing their frustrations online.
HSBC: Issues Resolved
HSBC reported that their problems began around 8:20 AM. Account holders took to social media to voice their concerns and seek confirmation from others experiencing similar issues. One user on X (formerly Twitter) stated, “@HSBCUK the app is not working again and I need to pay bills,” while another added, “@HSBCUK what’s going on with the app/website? It’s payday and I can’t access my wages.”
HSBC issued a statement this morning apologizing for the inconvenience and informing customers that they were working on resolving the problem. Later, HSBC announced that their online and mobile banking services, as well as payment issues, had been fixed. A spokesperson for HSBC UK said, “Earlier issues with HSBC UK’s online and mobile banking services, as well as a separate payments issue affecting multiple banks, are now fixed. We’re really sorry to our customers who were impacted, and we continue to monitor systems closely.”
The issue with HSBC UK’s online and mobile banking was attributed to an internal technical error, while the broader payment issue was linked to a technical error with a third-party provider.
Virgin Money: Access Restored
Virgin Money customers experienced intermittent issues throughout Friday morning with the bank’s app and payments in and out of accounts. Virgin Money has since updated customers, stating that the mobile banking app is now “fully restored.”
In a statement on X, Virgin Money said, “Access to our mobile banking app has been fully restored and new payments continue to flow normally. Like other banks, we’re working hard to process the backlog of payments delayed as quickly as possible, and will update you as soon as we can.”
However, Virgin Money issued a warning to customers: “If you have tried to send a payment from your Virgin Money account and received an error message, but it has debited your Virgin Money account, please do not try to make the payment again, as it is in the queue and will be processed.”
Nationwide: Delays in Salary and Pension Payments
Nationwide customers are facing delays in receiving salary and pension payments today. Customers took to X on Friday morning to complain about not receiving their wages. One person remarked, “This has happened several times before,” while another noted this was “twice now in the past couple of months” they had experienced a delay.
Nationwide acknowledged the issue, stating they were “aware there is a delay with some customers receiving their salary or pension payments today.” They added, “These payments are being processed, and will be paid into your account today. Sorry for any inconvenience this is causing.”
Barclays: Latest Bank Hit by Glitch
Barclays is the latest bank to report an issue, with customers unable to send or receive payments. The major bank stated that they were aware of the issue and that their team was “doing everything they can” to get the “faster payment system” back up and running.

What is Downdetector?
Downdetector is an online website that allows users of popular services including X (Twitter), Instagram, Facebook, Virgin Media, and more to report if they are having trouble with the services. The site only reports an incident when the number of problem reports is significantly higher than the typical volume for that time of day.
