Earlier today, users across two Meta platforms reported disruptions in sending or receiving multimedia messages and voice notes on WhatsApp and Messenger. As spotted by 9to5Google, the outage began around 12 p.m. ET on Monday (June 27). It affected both services and seemed to have peaked for 82% of WhatsApp users and 79% of users on Facebook Messenger at approximately 1 p.m. ET. Some users have taken to social media to express frustration about the ongoing outage.
Impact on Multimedia Messaging
Sending and receiving multimedia messages, including photos, videos, and voice notes, appeared to be at the center of this outage. For those experiencing it, pictures, videos, and voice messages failed to upload onto the platform or were stuck endlessly loading. Regular text messages, however, were not impacted by the outage.
Android Central's staff tried using WhatsApp to send an image, but it took a couple of minutes to go through rather than being instantly delivered to the user. This delay was a common issue reported by many users during the outage period.
Efforts to Fix the Issue
WhatsApp took to Twitter to acknowledge the problem and assure users that they were working on fixing the issue. "Estamos cientes de problemas com o envio de mídias e estamos trabalhando para resolver o mais rápido possível," they tweeted, indicating their awareness and efforts to resolve the issue as quickly as possible.
Some users have already started to see services return to normal on their devices, and the situation is expected to improve in the next couple of hours. The gradual restoration of services has brought a sigh of relief to many who rely on these platforms for daily communication.
As the situation continues to evolve, users are advised to stay tuned for further updates from WhatsApp and Facebook Messenger. The companies are expected to provide more information as they work towards a complete resolution of the outage.
More to come… check back for updates.
