In a troubling development for Android users, over 11 million devices have fallen victim to a potent malware strain known as the Necro trojan. This malicious software has infiltrated smartphones and tablets through unofficial modified applications and game mods, according to a recent report from Kaspersky. Initially identified in 2019, the Necro trojan has resurfaced with enhanced capabilities, now being distributed even through official apps available on the Google Play Store.

Once the malware is installed, it has the potential to download additional components, effectively transforming infected devices into instruments for adware, subscription fraud, and even as proxy servers to transmit harmful traffic.

Delete these dangerous apps from your phones

The report highlights two particularly hazardous applications that have played a significant role in the malware’s spread: Wuta Camera and Max Browser.

  • Wuta Camera: A widely used photography app, Wuta Camera has amassed around 10 million downloads. Users are encouraged to remove older versions of the app and either update to the latest version or download a fresh installation.
  • Max Browser: Downloaded over a million times, Max Browser has also been taken down due to its association with the malware.

In addition to these applications, modified versions of popular apps such as Spotify Plus, WhatsApp, and Minecraft have also been compromised. Cybercriminals often exploit these modified versions by enticing users with promises of enhanced features and functionalities.

How to protect yourself

To safeguard against Android malware, it is crucial to download applications exclusively from official sources like the Google Play Store. Ensuring that Google Play Protect is activated on your device adds an extra layer of security.

  1. Review Ratings and Feedback: Before downloading any application, even from reputable stores, users should take the time to review its ratings and feedback.
  2. Watch Video Reviews: Watching video reviews can provide additional insights into the app’s functionality.
  3. Employ Antivirus Software: Employing antivirus software to scan Android devices can help identify and eliminate any existing infections.

By following these steps, users can significantly reduce their risk of falling victim to the Necro trojan and other malicious software. Stay vigilant and keep your devices secure.
