Understanding the Deep Sleeping Apps Feature
The Deep Sleeping Apps feature on Samsung phones is a straightforward yet powerful tool designed to prevent apps from running in the background. This helps conserve system resources, particularly the battery. If you suspect an app is draining too much battery power, such as social media apps, you can add them to the Deep Sleeping Apps list. The app will only become active when you launch it and will return to a deep sleep state once you are done using it.
How to Add an App to the Deep Sleeping Apps List
While your Samsung phone automatically adds infrequently used apps to the list, you can manually ensure the feature is on and add specific apps:
- Swipe down from the top of your screen and tap Settings (gear icon).
- Select Battery and device care from the list.
- Tap the Battery option on the following screen.
- Tap Background usage limits from the menu that appears.
- Make sure the Put unused apps to sleep switch is toggled on.
- Select the Deep sleeping apps option to manually include an app and see what’s on the list. You should also see the number of apps automatically added to the list.
- Tap the plus icon in the top right corner of the screen.
- Scroll down the list of apps and check the ones you want to add manually.
- Once you have selected the apps, tap the Add button at the bottom of the screen.
The list of deep-sleeping apps will be divided between those automatically added by your phone and those you have added manually.
The Drawbacks of Deep Sleeping Apps
While adding apps to the deep sleeping list significantly improves battery life and overall Android battery optimization, it’s not without its drawbacks. One major downside is that you may miss essential notifications when an app is in a deep sleep state. To help conserve battery life, apps in Deep Sleep stop certain functionalities, including checking for new data and sending notifications.
Removing Apps from the Deep Sleeping Apps List
If you find that you are missing critical notifications, you can easily remove apps from the Deep Sleeping Apps list:
- Return to the Battery > Deep Sleeping Apps section and tap the three-dot button in the top right corner.
- Select the Remove button.
- Select the app(s) you want to remove from the Deep Sleeping Apps list.
- Once the apps are selected, tap the Remove button at the bottom of the screen.
Avoid Missing Notifications: Never Auto Sleeping Apps
If missing notifications is a concern, you can add specific apps to the “Never Auto Sleeping Apps” list. This process is similar to adding or removing apps from the Deep Sleeping Apps list:
- Navigate to Battery > Background usage limits.
- Select the Never Auto Sleeping Apps option.
- Add or remove apps as needed.
The Verdict: Is Putting Apps to Deep Sleep Good?
Adding apps to a deep sleep state has its pros and cons. On one hand, it improves overall battery life, helping you get through the day with minimal charging. On the other hand, you may miss important app updates when an app is sleeping. Fortunately, you can experiment with which apps to add or remove according to your personal preferences. For instance, if you don’t need constant updates from social media or games, adding them to the list makes sense. However, for essential notifications like emails, you might want to keep those apps active.
This balance between battery optimization and staying informed is key to making the most out of your Samsung phone’s capabilities.
