Simon Collins-Laflamme, founder of Hypixel Studios and creator of Hytale, has revived the game following its cancellation by Riot Games in June. Collins-Laflamme quickly assembled a team of more than 30 developers to focus on delivering an early-access version of the game.
Project Renewal After Riot's Exit
Originally developed by Hypixel Studios, Hytale was sold to Riot Games before being cancelled. Collins-Laflamme, undeterred by this setback, stepped back into the project, hiring a dedicated team to bring Hytale back to life. He noted that the rescued project's current build is largely unfit for release, being a patchwork of over 300 prototype versions.
The team has chosen to forego a new cross-platform engine, which would have delayed a playable version by approximately two years. Instead, they are refining a four-year-old build, aiming to enhance basic elements like exploration, combat, and game atmosphere.
Early Access and Player Feedback
Collins-Laflamme emphasizes the importance of player feedback during the early-access phase. He acknowledged that while elements like exploration and combat show potential, the overall gameplay loop requires significant development.
- Hytale was originally developed by Hypixel and purchased by Riot Games.
- Riot Games cancelled the project in June 2023.
- Simon Collins-Laflamme rehired a team of over 30 developers.
- The current game build uses a four-year-old base with over 300 prototypes.
- Early access will allow for community feedback and iteration.
Collins-Laflamme reassures players that this renewed effort is genuine and intends to create a robust gaming experience. He plans to continue refining the game, with crucial input from the gaming community to ensure the development aligns with player expectations. Over the coming months, Collins-Laflamme pledges to empower his team to push towards delivering an enhanced early-access experience.
