Expedition 33, developed by Sandfall, takes a bold storytelling approach by introducing and quickly killing off a beloved character, Gustave. The game challenges traditional narrative norms to engage players emotionally.
Game Development Strategy
According to Sandfall CEO Guillaume Broche and COO Francois Meurisse, the decision to kill Gustave early in the game was a deliberate move to differentiate Expedition 33 from other titles. They wanted to avoid 'playing it safe' with their storytelling to provoke strong emotional responses from players. Broche stated that the sudden, heroic death of Gustave, voiced by Charlie Cox, was meant to create an intense feeling of loss and deepen the player's connection to the game's cast.
Gameplay and Player Experience
Despite the controversial narrative choice, the developers ensured that players' progress wasn't compromised. Player progress is cleverly transferred to another character, Verso, allowing for a seamless continuation of the game. While the developers acknowledge that not all players appreciate the move, they are satisfied with how attached players became to Gustave, appreciating the mix of admiration and resentment that the character's fate inspired.
Expedition 33's innovative approach illustrates a shift in video game storytelling, opting for emotional engagement and memorable narratives over predictability. Sandfall plans to release additional content in the coming months, promising to maintain their commitment to impactful storytelling.
