In 2024, the European gaming industry underwent a significant transformation as digital purchases dominated the market, according to the latest All About Video Games report. Digital sales surged to account for 90% of Europe's total gaming revenue, eclipsing traditional physical sales. This trend marks a 5% increase in digital revenue from 2023, confirming the digital shift in consumer preferences.
Mobile Gaming Dominates
Mobile gaming has emerged as the standout sector, capturing 44% of the total gaming revenue. With widespread smartphone accessibility and an expanding library of engaging titles, mobile gaming has swiftly become Europe's preferred gaming platform.
Despite more Europeans reporting playing on consoles, their contribution to revenue decreased, capturing 38% of the market in 2024. This paradox reflects a complex dynamic where increased competition and pricing strategies might have impacted spending patterns.
PC Gaming: Growth Amid Decline
The report highlights a curious trend within the PC gaming sector. Even though the share of European gamers playing on PCs declined from 46% in 2023 to 43% in 2024, PC gaming revenue experienced slight growth, now accounting for 15% of total gaming revenue, which is a 1% increase from the previous year.
This growth comes amidst a broader market shift that saw physical gaming sales plummeting by half since 2020, now constituting only 10% of the total gaming revenue. The challenges are becoming increasingly complex, as fewer players are opting to use PCs while produced content continues to resonate financially.
Streaming and Game Successes
The remaining 4% of the market belongs to on-demand and streaming services, another growing segment with potential for future expansion. As infrastructure for these services improves, they are poised to capture an increasing slice of the market pie.
