Android Adds Automatic Downloads Backup Feature

Android has introduced a native, automatic backup feature for the Downloads folder, enhancing data protection for users. This update, part of the February Google Play System release, includes a new toggle under Settings > Google > Backup, allowing users to save files from Downloads to Google Drive.

Backup Functionality and Limitations

The new feature stores files as static copies, meaning any changes made on the phone after the backup will not be reflected in Google Drive, and vice versa. Initially, the backup supports common document types, though some unusual file formats may not be included yet.

Gradual Rollout and User Impact

The rollout of this feature is gradual, so it may not be immediately available to all users. This update addresses a long-standing gap in Android's backup capabilities, which previously covered photos and device/app data but often left downloaded documents unprotected.
