Google is advancing its plan to enable video playback on Android Auto while vehicles are parked, as indicated by a new beta feature. This development follows Google's announcement at I/O 2025, emphasizing a controlled and safety-focused rollout.
Beta Feature and Implementation
The latest Android Auto beta, version 16.3.160744, includes a configuration flag named "CradleFeature__allow_video_apps." Although this toggle does not yet activate video playback, it suggests ongoing work to support video apps on car displays when stationary. The feature requires coordination across several components, including the host app, projection protocol, and parked-state verification.
Enhancing EV Charging Experience
Parked video playback addresses downtime during electric vehicle (EV) charging sessions, which can last 20-40 minutes. By transforming the car's display into an entertainment screen, Android Auto aligns with capabilities already available in Android Automotive OS, used by brands like Volvo and Polestar.
Safety and Market Rollout
Google plans to enforce strict safety measures, ensuring video playback only occurs when the vehicle is parked. This approach complies with guidelines from the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and similar international regulations. A phased rollout is expected, with initial availability likely limited to select partners and markets.
