App Bloat Drives Demand for More Phone Storage

22 Jun 2026

Android users are increasingly facing storage challenges due to app bloat, prompting many to seek devices with larger capacities. Base models of popular phones like the Pixel 10 typically offer 128GB of storage, but this is often insufficient for users who install numerous apps.

Impact on Storage Capacity

Many Android apps have grown significantly in size. For instance, a Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 user reported apps occupying around 80GB. Even seemingly simple apps can be storage-intensive: the Dreame vacuum app uses over 700MB, while the Ecovacs app requires about 400MB. Financial and shopping apps like PayPal, Chase, and TurboTax also contribute to the issue, with sizes ranging from 300MB to over 500MB.

Industry Shift to Larger Storage

With system files and apps consuming substantial space, users are left with limited free storage on 128GB devices. Deleted files and previous versions of images can further reduce available space. As a result, a minimum of 256GB is recommended for a comfortable margin, with 512GB being ideal for heavy app users. The industry is responding by offering new flagship phones with 256GB as the base storage, and mid-range models are increasingly providing higher capacities.
