Best Antivirus Software 2026: 6 Advanced+ Picks

In the ever-evolving landscape of cybersecurity, selecting the right antivirus software is crucial for protecting your devices from malicious threats. The latest evaluations by AV-Comparatives have identified six antivirus products that earned the prestigious Advanced+ award in their September 2026 Malware Protection Test. This article delves into the details of these top performers, examining their protection rates, false alarm counts, system impact, and overall value.

Top Contenders in Antivirus Software

As cyber threats continue to increase in sophistication, the demand for reliable antivirus solutions grows. The following six products stood out in recent testing:

• Bitdefender Total Security
• Kaspersky Premium
• G DATA Total Security
• ESET HOME Security Essential
• Total Defense Essential Anti-Virus
• VIPRE Advanced Security

1. Bitdefender Total Security

With a remarkable protection rate of 99.98%, Bitdefender Total Security tops the list of antivirus solutions. It boasts only one false alarm out of 10,000 tests, making it an excellent choice for most Windows users. Despite not being the fastest option, its combination of high protection and low false alarms makes it a strong contender. Pricing starts at $59.99 for five devices in the first year.

2. Kaspersky Premium

Kaspersky Premium follows closely with a protection rate of 99.97% and five false alarms. Its lightweight system impact makes it suitable for older or slower PCs. The software also emphasizes behavioral blocking, which helps catch threats that may slip through during offline detection. Pricing varies, and users should verify local availability before purchasing.

3. G DATA Total Security

G DATA scored 99.93% in protection with only one false alarm. This product is particularly appealing for those who prioritize quiet, low-interruption protection. It operates on the Bitdefender engine, meaning it shares some underlying technology with Bitdefender Total Security. Each device costs approximately 16.39 EUR when purchased in bulk.

4. ESET HOME Security Essential

ESET offers a balanced protection rate of 99.89% with three false alarms. Its detection capabilities are consistent both online and offline, making it a reliable choice for users frequently on the move. However, it has the highest cost per device among the Advanced+ products, priced at $20.00 for each of three devices.

5. Total Defense Essential Anti-Virus

Total Defense achieved a protection rate of 99.95% but is noted for its higher system impact, making it less suitable for gaming or video editing machines. Specific pricing details are not widely available, so potential users should check the company’s site for the latest offers.

6. VIPRE Advanced Security

VIPRE rounds out the list with a protection rate of 99.80% and six false alarms. The product is also based on the Bitdefender engine, which contributes to its solid performance. Pricing for VIPRE is less transparent, making it a less appealing choice for new customers without clear cost information.

Factors Influencing Antivirus Selection

When choosing an antivirus solution, several factors should be considered:

• Protection Rate: Look for software with a high detection rate against various malware types.
• False Alarms: A lower number of false alarms can help maintain productivity without unnecessary interruptions.
• System Impact: Consider how the antivirus will affect the performance of your device, especially for resource-intensive tasks.
• Price: Evaluate both initial and renewal pricing to understand the total cost of ownership over time.
• Device Compatibility: Ensure the antivirus is compatible with your operating system and hardware specifications.

As cyber threats continue to evolve, investing in a robust antivirus solution is critical. The right choice will depend on your specific needs, preferences, and the particular use cases for the software. The spread between the highest and lowest protection rates among the six Advanced+ award winners was just 0.18% in the September 2026 Malware Protection Test.
