Bluesky Integrates Germ for Encrypted Messaging

Bluesky has integrated Germ Network's technology to introduce end-to-end encrypted (E2EE) messaging within its app, marking Germ DM as the first private messenger to be natively launched on Bluesky.

Germ Integration Details

Germ, a California-based company founded by Tessa Brown and Mark Xue, uses the Messaging Layer Security (MLS) standard and AT Protocol (ATProto) for secure communications. This ensures that messages cannot be decrypted by any other service, including Bluesky itself. Users can now add a Germ badge to their Bluesky profiles, which allows others to initiate E2EE messaging through an iOS App Clip, authenticating with their ATProto handle.

Market Impact and User Growth

Following the integration announcement, Germ's daily active users increased fivefold. The standalone Germ app is currently in public beta on iOS, available in North America and Europe. The company initially launched with a private beta using bio magic links and collaborated with the ATProto developer community and Bluesky teams to enhance user experience with native badges and improved AppView support.

Future Developments

Germ is focused on delivering core messaging features and plans to explore paid features for prosumer users in the future. These may include multiple handles and private AI-powered screening of initial messages. Another ATProto client, Blacksky, has also added support for the Germ badge, indicating growing adoption within the protocol's ecosystem.
