Google Enhances Android Security to Combat Malware

22 Jun 2026

In 2025, Google significantly enhanced security measures across the Android ecosystem, blocking over 1.75 million apps that did not meet its stringent requirements. The company also deleted more than 80,000 developer accounts associated with malicious activities.

Advanced AI and App Screening

Google has integrated advanced AI models to assist human reviewers in detecting sophisticated malware patterns that were previously difficult to identify. This AI-driven approach is part of a broader effort to bolster security and privacy on Android devices. Google Play Protect now scans approximately 350 billion apps daily, aiming to intercept threats before they reach users.

Additionally, Google's privacy-first review process has prevented 255,000 apps from accessing more personal data than necessary, reinforcing user privacy.

Improving Trust and User Safety

To enhance trust in the Google Play Store, Google removed 160 million fake ratings and reviews. This move is intended to provide users with more reliable information when downloading apps.

Beyond app screening, Google introduced in-call scam detection, a feature designed to identify and intervene in active scam calls to protect users. Looking forward, Android 16 will incorporate tapjacking protection, a measure aimed at preventing apps from hijacking user taps and reducing risks associated with predatory subscriptions and privacy breaches.
