Google has announced significant changes to its Android app ecosystem as part of a proposed settlement with Epic Games. The changes include a new Registered App Stores program and adjustments to the app fee structure.
New App Store Program
The Registered App Stores program will allow third-party app stores to register with Google, providing a streamlined installation experience if they meet specific quality and safety standards. This program is optional for developers and will be introduced outside the US first, appearing in a major Android release later this year. It will become available in the US following court approval.
Updated Fee Structure
Google's new billing plan separates service fees from Google Play billing fees. Developers will face a service fee of 15–20%, with an additional 5% charge for those using Google Play billing in the US, Europe, and the UK. For in-app subscriptions, the service fee drops to 10% from 15%, but the 5% billing fee may negate this reduction for many developers. The new billing structure will be implemented in the US, UK, and Europe by the end of June and globally by September 30, 2027.
Impact on Developers
The changes aim to provide more flexibility and options for developers, potentially reducing costs for those who opt out of Google Play billing. However, the additional 5% fee for using Google Play billing could offset some of the benefits. The Registered App Stores program is expected to enhance the sideloading experience, offering a more seamless integration for third-party app stores.
