Sony to Reduce PC Ports of PlayStation Exclusives

Sony is reportedly shifting its strategy regarding the release of PlayStation exclusives on PC, with fewer titles expected to make the transition in the future.

According to sources, Sony's strategy changed last year, with a focus on retaining single-player titles on PlayStation consoles for longer periods. This adjustment suggests that many popular games may not be ported to PC at all. Instead, Sony plans to concentrate its cross-platform efforts on live-service games.

Performance Metrics

Sony's previous PC releases have shown varied success. Steam data indicates that titles like Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition, Spider-Man Remastered, and Ghost of Tsushima achieved peak concurrent player numbers of 56,557, 66,436, and 77,154, respectively. Meanwhile, God of War reached 73,529 players, and its sequel hit 35,615. The standout performer was Stellar Blade, with over 190,000 players, although it was developed by Shift Up, a studio not owned by Sony.

Market Implications

The decision to reduce PC ports comes amid criticism of Sony's initial requirement for PC players to register on PlayStation Network, which restricted access in regions without PSN support. Although Sony later reversed this policy, it had already affected parts of the PC gaming community. The long-term impact on Sony's presence in the PC market remains uncertain, especially with no new console expected until at least 2027. This could lead Sony to maintain exclusives on its platform longer to bolster hardware sales, contrasting with Microsoft's strategy of offering day-one releases on Game Pass.
