Rebooting PC and Updating Wi-Fi Drivers: Effective Internet Troubleshooter

22 Jun 2026

Before diving into complex solutions, the simplest and often most effective step is rebooting your PC. This quick action can resolve many issues, including a disabled Wi-Fi icon, saving you time and energy.

Run the Internet Troubleshooter

Windows 11 comes equipped with a built-in Internet Connection troubleshooter, an excellent first step when encountering network or internet connectivity issues.

  1. Search for "Troubleshoot" in the Windows search bar and select Troubleshoot settings from the results.
  2. Select Other troubleshooters.
  3. Next to Internet Connections, select Run and follow the on-screen instructions.

Enable the Wi-Fi Adapter Manually

Sometimes, your network adapter for Wi-Fi may be disabled for various reasons. Here’s how to re-enable it:

  1. Use Windows search to look for Network connections. Select View network connections from the results.
  2. If your Wi-Fi adapter is disabled, right-click it and select Enable. Provide admin approval if requested.

Update Your Wi-Fi Drivers

Outdated or corrupted Wi-Fi drivers can cause connectivity issues. Follow these steps to update them:

  1. Use Windows search to look for Device manager and select the corresponding result.
  2. Select the arrow next to Network Adapters to expand the list.
  3. Find your main Wi-Fi adapter, right-click it, and select Update driver.
  4. Select Search automatically for drivers and follow the on-screen prompts.
  5. If Windows doesn’t find any new drivers, check the manufacturer’s website for updates and install them manually.
  6. If updating doesn’t work, try uninstalling and reinstalling the driver. Right-click the Wi-Fi adapter in Device Manager, select Uninstall device, reboot your PC, and reinstall the driver from the manufacturer’s website.

Adjust Your Network Adapter Power Settings

Windows has built-in power-saving features that can turn off your network adapter during certain sleep states, potentially causing your Wi-Fi icon to disappear. To prevent this:

  1. Use Windows search to look for Device manager and select the corresponding result.
  2. Select the arrow next to Network Adapters to expand the list.
  3. Find your main Wi-Fi adapter, right-click it, and select Properties.
  4. Select the Power management tab at the top. Ensure that “Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power” is not checked. If it is, uncheck it and select OK. Reboot your PC if necessary.

Run Windows Update

Running a Windows update can sometimes resolve network issues. While you’ll need an Ethernet connection to do this if your Wi-Fi isn’t working, it’s worth a try as a last resort.

Tackling Wi-Fi issues can be frustrating, but these steps offer a structured approach to troubleshooting. From rebooting your PC to updating drivers and adjusting power settings, these solutions can help restore your internet connectivity efficiently.
