Windows 11 Adds Option for Smaller Taskbar Icons

22 Jun 2026

Windows 11 has introduced a new feature that allows users to shrink Taskbar icons, improving horizontal efficiency by fitting more apps before reaching the overflow menu. Available as of 2025-12-13, this update makes management of open applications more streamlined, particularly on smaller screens or during intensive multitasking.

Enabling and Usage Options

The option to use smaller Taskbar icons can be activated through Settings. Users can navigate to Personalization, then Taskbar, and access Taskbar behaviors to choose from three settings: "Always," "When taskbar is full," or "Never." This flexibility allows users to optimize their workflow by managing app icon size according to their needs without altering the Taskbar's height.

Impact on Usability

Though the Taskbar height remains unchanged, the feature's primary aim is to enhance horizontal space usage. This can help to prevent apps from spilling over into the overflow section prematurely, thus ensuring more applications remain readily accessible. This setting will particularly benefit users with limited screen real estate or those who frequently operate multiple applications simultaneously.
