Windows 11 Adds Optional Right-Click 'End Task' Feature for Apps

Windows 11 has introduced a convenient right-click ‘end task’ feature, accessible directly through an app’s taskbar button. While this efficient tool is not enabled by default, activating it is a straightforward process that requires only a few clicks within the Windows Settings app.

Upon a fresh installation of Windows 11, users typically encounter a series of steps before they can terminate a misbehaving application. When faced with a frozen or unresponsive task, the standard procedure for vanilla Windows 11 users involves pressing CTRL-ALT-DEL to launch the Task Manager or right-clicking an empty area of the taskbar to select it. However, Microsoft’s latest operating system offers a more streamlined solution.

Enabling the Taskbar Shortcut

As previously mentioned, enabling the ‘End task’ option in the app’s taskbar popup is a quick and reversible process. To activate this feature, users can follow these simple steps:

1. Open Windows 11 settings using the Win+I keyboard shortcut or by locating it in the Start Menu.
2. Select ‘System’ from the menu.
3. Navigate to ‘For developers,’ keeping in mind the advisory that “these settings are intended for development use only.”
4. Scroll down slightly and toggle the ‘End task’ option to ‘On.’
5. Test the feature, assess its utility, and decide whether to maintain the toggle in the ‘On’ position.
