Windows Update Fixes Snipping Tool Issues; Alternative Tools Available

12 Jun 2024

In the fast-paced world of business, efficiency is key. When tools like the Snipping Tool on Windows start acting up, it can be a real productivity killer. Fortunately, there are several steps you can take to get things back on track.

End Task

First, try ending the task. Open Task Manager by pressing Ctrl + Shift + Esc. Click the Processes tab, find SnippingTool.exe, right-click it, and then click End Task. This simple action can sometimes resolve minor glitches.

Restart Your Computer

If ending the task doesn’t work, a computer restart might do the trick. While it may seem too easy, restarting your computer can fix a myriad of issues. It’s always worth a try before diving into more technical solutions.

Enable Notifications

Sometimes, the issue might be as simple as notifications being turned off. Open the Settings app and select System > Notifications. Enable notifications by clicking the On switch if it isn’t already on. This can ensure you’re receiving all necessary alerts related to the Snipping Tool.

Update Keyboard Drivers

Outdated keyboard drivers can also cause problems. Press the Windows Key + X and then select Device Manager. Click the drop-down icon next to the Keyboards option, right-click on your keyboard, and click Update Drivers. Choose Search Automatically for drivers and follow the instructions.

Update Windows

An outdated operating system can lead to compatibility issues. Open the Settings app and click Windows Update. Click the Check for updates button and follow the steps to run any available updates. Keeping your system updated ensures that all tools, including the Snipping Tool, function optimally.

Reinstall Snipping Tool

If none of the above steps work, consider reinstalling the Snipping Tool. Open the Settings app, click Apps, and then click Installed Apps. Find the Snipping Tool app, click the three dots, and then click Uninstall. Once uninstalled, visit the Microsoft Store to download and reinstall the Snipping Tool afresh.

If All Else Fails, Use an Alternative Tool

If all else fails, there’s no harm in exploring alternative tools. The Windows Snipping Tool is quite basic, and there are many alternatives available that offer more features. For instance, Lightshot is available for both Windows and Mac and comes with added functionalities like small edits right on the capture before saving it. Additionally, Lightshot allows you to upload captures online and provides a short link directly to the file within seconds—something not available in the Windows Snipping Tool.

A third-party app often offers more features, which could save you even more time. The goal is to capture your screen efficiently, so why not make it as efficient as possible?

Troubleshooting tools like the Snipping Tool doesn’t have to be a daunting task. With these steps, you can quickly get back to capturing your screen and maintaining your productivity.
