Windows 10 Still Dominates Among Steam Users Despite End-of-Support

17 Feb 2025

In a surprising twist, an impressive number of Steam users continue to favor Windows 10 as their primary operating system. Microsoft, which announced that official support for Windows 10 will cease in 2025, still sees the OS commanding significant loyalty, nearly a decade after its initial launch.

With almost 50% of users participating in Steam's latest hardware survey reporting the use of Windows 10, it remains clear that the operating system is entrenched in the gaming community. This persistence occurs despite Microsoft's recent push towards upgrading users to Windows 11.

The Challenge of Market Share

Windows 11, released with the aim of succeeding its predecessor, has managed to secure only 36.6% of the market share among Steam users. This figure hints at the hurdles Microsoft faces in advocating for a transition from Windows 10. The reticence in mass adoption of Windows 11 suggests that users are not witnessing enough compelling advantages to make the jump.

Microsoft's strategy can need reconsideration, given that Windows 10 continues to prove itself as a robust and reliable platform. Users may be hesitant to move away from a platform that consistently provides stability and performance, despite the looming end of support.

Security and the Future

Microsoft’s decision to end support for Windows 10 in October 2025 implies that users would be exposed to heightened security risks if they continue to use the outdated platform. Yet, the enduring popularity of Windows 10 suggests a complex relationship between Microsoft’s products and their loyal customer base—people appreciate what works best for their needs, often beyond the influence of marketing and product lifecycle strategies.

The challenge for Microsoft lies in how effectively it can persuade its existing user base of the necessity and merit of migrating to Windows 11. Until then, Windows 10's dominance, especially among the gaming community represented on platforms like Steam, could serve as proof that technical demands and consumer preferences often follow their nuanced path.
