In a recent interview with Gamesindustry.biz, Mark Cerny, lead architect for Sony’s PlayStation consoles, expressed his belief that Sony’s efforts occasionally lead the way for the larger gaming industry. Cerny highlighted examples such as the efficient GPU interfaces on the PS4, which may have influenced the development of DirectX to become more efficient in response.
Despite initial perceptions of the PS4 being underpowered, Cerny pointed out that features like DirectX 12 API were announced shortly after the console’s release, suggesting a potential influence from Sony’s technology advancements.
High-Performance Integrated SSD in PS5
One area where Cerny sees Sony’s impact is with the high-performance integrated SSD in the PS5. He believes that the release of the PS5 in 2020 pressured the PC world to develop corresponding technologies like the DirectStorage API for gamers.
While consoles and PCs share similarities in hardware architecture, Cerny argues that features like the dedicated decompression hardware in the PS5 have pushed the industry forward. Sony’s recent efforts to port games to PC, along with support for peripherals like the DualSense controller, have further blurred the lines between console and PC gaming.
However, not all PC gamers may agree with Cerny’s perspective, as some early PC ports of PlayStation games have faced challenges like performance issues and compatibility issues.
