Nova Launcher Discontinued by Branch as Founder Departs

09 Sep 2025

Nova Launcher, a highly-regarded Android application for home screen customization, has reached the end of its development journey. This development comes as Kevin Barry, the original creator and last standing developer of the app, announced his departure from Branch, the company that acquired Nova in 2022.

The Rise of Nova Launcher

Since its inception in 2011, Nova Launcher has been instrumental in shaping the Android experience for millions of users worldwide. Known for its extensive customization options, Nova allowed users to personalize their home screens far beyond the native capabilities of most Android devices. From altering icon sizes to integrating unique gestures, the app became a beloved tool for those seeking more control over their user interface.

Branch’s Acquisition and Workforce Changes

The landscape began to shift when Branch acquired Nova Launcher in 2022. Initially, the acquisition seemed promising, with the potential for further development and support. However, Branch underwent a series of workforce reductions in 2024, which left Kevin Barry as the sole developer maintaining the project. Despite these challenges, Barry continued to dedicate his efforts to the app, even exploring the possibility of transitioning Nova into an open-source project, a mission that ultimately was not fulfilled.

Uncertain Future for Users

With Barry now having left Branch and the firm ceasing any updates or support for Nova Launcher, users are faced with an uncertain future. The last official update was released in May 2024, rendering it unsupported as of 2025. This leaves longtime users in search of alternative solutions that can offer similar customization freedoms.

Exploring Alternatives

The departure of Nova Launcher opens avenues for other launchers in the market. As enthusiasts of mobile customization look for new options, alternatives like Action Launcher and Microsoft Launcher have already started gaining attention. Moreover, the Android community is known for its resilience and innovation; likely, this gap will soon inspire new apps to emerge.

While Nova Launcher's discontinuation marks the end of an era, it also presents an opportunity for a new chapter in Android customization. Users will undoubtedly feel the absence of a tool that has consistently proven itself indispensable, yet the spirit of innovation that Nova encapsulated will persist within the community.
