Gemini Enhancements Streamline Advanced Tools Access on Android

07 Oct 2025

Gemini, Google's AI assistant, is poised to transform its utility on Android flagship devices with the potential introduction of a new Tools icon in its overlay. This development seeks to bring advanced functionalities, such as image-generation, video creation, and Deep Research, directly to users without the need to switch applications.

Streamlined Access Through Overlay

The Gemini overlay, already popular for its ease of access from third-party apps, might soon offer even more convenience. The inclusion of the Tools icon is expected to allow users to access powerful features like Canvas and AI-powered capabilities by simply tapping within the overlay itself. This change is part of Google's efforts to make Gemini not just a background assistant but a more integral part of everyday mobile interaction.

The code for this anticipated feature, found in version 16.40.18 of the Google app, suggests that once a tool is selected, its icon will appear in the input box. Users will then have the ability to employ text or voice commands to utilize these features effectively. This advancement could significantly enhance productivity and creativity, offering a seamless experience for those who frequently engage with complex tasks on their devices.

Innovative Tools and Options

Beyond simplification, the overlay may also adopt a Circle to Select feature. Users will be able to circle a portion of their screen, allowing them to instantly create a screenshot of that specific view. This functionality will complement the existing capabilities while making the screenshot process more intuitive and specialized.

Further, Google is revising how users interact with generated images in the Gemini app. Notably, the sharing and download icons are set to be relocated to the bottom of the image interface, and a new Copy Image option will be added. These changes aim to make image handling smoother, as Copy and Download options will be integrated into the three-dot menu for generated images, alongside traditional options like Save, Copy, and Share.

While these enhancements are currently contained within in-progress code, which often precedes public release, they underscore a promising evolution in how users can harness the capabilities of AI within their Android ecosystems.

Anticipating Future Capabilities

This strategic development by Google highlights its commitment to expanding Gemini's practical applications. By investing in the overlay’s capabilities and ensuring greater accessibility to advanced tools, Google aims to stay at the forefront of AI-driven convenience on mobile platforms.

Although APK teardowns can offer insights into future features, they also serve as a reminder of the uncertain nature of software development. Not all predicted features may eventually reach the consumer stage, but their exploration signals Google's adaptive approach to enhancing digital interactions through its Gemini platform.
