Microsoft Lens to Be Phased Out on iOS and Android

23 Aug 2025

Microsoft has announced plans to phase out its Microsoft Lens app for both iOS and Android devices, beginning the process this September. This widely-used app, previously known as Office Lens, has served as a versatile tool for converting images into various digital formats such as PDF, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel. With the app boasting around 50 million downloads and a substantial number of positive reviews, its retirement marks a significant shift for many users accustomed to its convenient scanning capabilities.

According to Microsoft's carefully outlined timeline, new downloads of the app will no longer be available on the App Store and Google Play Store from mid-November. Although users who already have the app installed will be able to continue utilizing existing scans found in the MyScans folder, all new scanning functionalities will cease to operate after December 15, 2025. This move represents Microsoft's broader strategy to streamline its offerings and enhance focus on its integrated suite of productivity tools.

Transition to Microsoft 365 Copilot

In light of these changes, Microsoft encourages users to transition to the Microsoft 365 Copilot app. While Copilot incorporates scanning abilities and stores files into the MyCreations section accessible via OneDrive, it currently falls short of replicating some of the more specialized features that Microsoft Lens users have grown accustomed to. For instance, Copilot doesn't yet support saving scanned documents directly into OneNote, Word, or PowerPoint, nor can it scan business cards into OneNote. Additionally, features like read-aloud and Immersive Reader integration remain absent from Copilot's current iteration.

Despite these limitations, Microsoft has expressed a commitment to continually enhance the Copilot app, aiming to integrate additional functionalities that will address current shortcomings and deliver a more robust user experience.

Microsoft Lens joins a list of other apps and services the tech giant plans to retire this year. This strategic realignment highlights Microsoft's ongoing efforts to focus on more comprehensive platforms that offer a broader range of services under a unified umbrella, directing users toward streamlined productivity solutions.
