Signal Introduces Secure Cloud Backup Feature for Users

09 Sep 2025

Signal, a well-regarded messaging app known for its strong privacy features, is unveiling a long-awaited cloud backup feature. Currently available to Android users in the beta channel, the new Secure Backups feature is a significant step forward for those who have previously lost conversations while switching devices.

This newly introduced system is an opt-in service that diligently creates a daily backup of user conversations. It securely stores these backups, providing users with the convenience of restoring their conversations when needed. Introducing a crucial improvement, Signal's new backup system aims to be more user-friendly and practical, especially for individuals previously inconvenienced by local-transfer processes.

Subscription and Recovery Key

To give users a glimpse of this enhanced feature, Signal offers a free 45-day backup period. After this trial, users can ensure continuous backup of their chat history by subscribing for a modest fee of $1.99 per month. The switch from a purely local backup system to this paid cloud service is a strategic move to provide a more reliable and seamless user experience.

A critical aspect of this system is the 64-character recovery key, which users must keep safe. This key serves as the sole connector to their backed-up messages. Should it be lost, Signal emphasizes their inability to assist in message recovery, thus highlighting the importance of secure key storage methods such as utilizing a password manager.

Unique Approach

Distinctively, Signal's backup service avoids the use of third-party cloud providers like Google Drive and iCloud, unlike its counterparts in the messaging app industry. By constructing its own proprietary backup system, Signal maintains a high standard of data protection and user privacy, justifying the subscription model introduced.

This new feature addresses a major pain point for Signal users who frequently switch devices, making it easier to migrate without data loss. The addition of this backup option demonstrates Signal's ongoing commitment to enhancing user experience while maintaining the privacy and security it is renowned for.
