The Google Home app is undergoing a significant transformation that promises to enrich the way users interact with their smart home environments. The app's latest update, version 3.41.50.3, introduces the innovative Gemini for Home, replacing the Google Assistant on smart home devices. This shift is accompanied by the launch of Gemini Live, designed to facilitate more natural and conversational interactions.
The New Era of Smart Home Interaction
Central to the redesign is the Ask Home search bar, offering users the ability to articulate automations through natural language or search for detailed video and home history. Alongside this, the app will feature AI-generated event descriptions, notifications, and daily summaries, marking a leap forward in user-friendly home automation. While some of these features will be freely available, a forthcoming Google Home Premium subscription will unlock additional capabilities.
Accompanying these software innovations is the anticipated launch of a new Google Home Speaker featuring 360-degree audio, enhancing the auditory experience for users. The app redesign also rebrands and reorganizes its existing features. The Favorites tab is now simply referred to as 'Home,' and while the 'Devices' and 'Settings' tabs have been phased out, users will still find all their devices accessible via a new grid icon representing ‘All Devices.’
- Video and thermometer icons hint at deeper integrations with Nest devices, providing users with comprehensive control over their home’s environment.
- The Home Landing Screen is streamlined to display key data associated with the address designated as 'Home.'
- The interface sees a cleaner header section, consolidating Settings, Inbox, and Lab (for preview features) into the account switcher for easier access.
- The Activity and Automations tabs have not only been reordered but also sport refreshed icons and a slightly revamped visual style.
The device-add QR scanner interface has been updated, featuring a more focused scanning area by utilizing a reduced preview size. This change ensures that users can swiftly and effectively add new devices to their network.
Accessing Gemini requires users to engage with the Ask Home bar, where first-time entry mandates acceptance of new terms and conditions. Once within, users can engage in an Ask Home conversation screen, granting feedback via thumbs up or down on responses, or choosing to regenerate answers if needed. Alternatively, starting a new conversation is always an option.
While Google has confirmed these changes, they remain in development and have yet to be deployed in a live environment. A formal announcement is scheduled for October 1, with a rollout of these features expected to follow. Though analysis of APK teardowns offers insights into these advancements, some features might not make it to public release.
