Gboard Update Lets Users Customize Keyboard Layout

23 Oct 2025

Google has updated the Gboard app for Android, enabling users to remove the comma and period keys from the QWERTY keyboard. This change is available in both stable and beta versions, including version 16.2.4 beta.

New Keyboard Settings

Gboard users can now personalize their keyboard by adjusting key availability. By going to Preferences and disabling settings labeled “Comma key — Show on keyboard for applicable languages” and “Period key — Show on keyboard for applicable languages,” users can simplify their virtual keyboard. Both settings are enabled by default.

Practical Implications

Disabling these keys results in a cleaner bottom row, displaying the ?123 button and the Enter key, extending the space bar’s length. Although users can still double-tap the space bar to insert a period, there is no alternative method for a comma if that key is removed.

Availability

The update was first noticed on a Pixel device running QPR2 Beta 3.1. The option is available for all Android users with the Gboard app and improves user customization preferences significantly.
