Google Expands Incognito to Android App, Aligns with iOS

23 Oct 2025

Google is introducing a new feature called History Off Search to its Android app, enabling Incognito-like functionality previously exclusive to iOS. Users can now engage in private browsing within the Google app, preventing interactions from being saved to their account history. This update brings parity across mobile platforms.

Functionality and User Experience

The History Off Search feature integrates a one-tap toggle into the search bar, allowing users to enable private mode without needing separate browser tabs. This mode extends to Google Chrome when links are opened there. Despite the privacy-first approach, Google maintains that aggregated data trends will still be used for result personalization, though not linked to individual profiles.

Privacy and Market Reaction

The move aligns with regulatory influences like the EU Digital Markets Act, which emphasizes user privacy. While the feature supports privacy, it does not shield users from ISP or website tracking. This highlights the need for continuous privacy education among users. Enhancements such as biometric locks for incognito are under consideration.

Release and Future Considerations

Currently undergoing testing, the feature's broader release is anticipated soon. Observations from app tear-downs have confirmed its presence, indicating an imminent expansion. As privacy trends evolve, Google may further integrate this feature with other services.
