Instagram Expands Teen Protection Features to Canadian Users

22 Sep 2025

Instagram is taking significant steps to enhance the safety of its younger users as it expands its Teen Account protections to Canada. Following a successful implementation in the United States, Instagram is leveraging artificial intelligence to identify and manage accounts of users who may not meet the age requirements. The technology can detect profiles with birthdays listed as adult but suspected of being underage and automatically transition these accounts into more secure Teen Account settings. This change is designed to restrict who can contact these users and limit the content they can access, providing a safer online environment.

While the system's accuracy might still face challenges, Instagram has put measures in place to ensure flexibility. If an adult is mistakenly classified as a teen, reverting the settings is straightforward. Users can correct their age, restoring their profile to its previous setup without loss of features or data.

Parental Support and Guidance

In an effort to reinforce these measures, Instagram is also reaching out to parents. Notifications will be sent to Canadian parents with tips and strategies co-developed with pediatric psychologist Dr. Ann-Louise Lockhart. These guidelines aim to assist parents in discussing the importance of using accurate birth dates online with their teenagers, emphasizing digital safety and transparency.

Instagram's initiative is backed by promising statistics: over 54 million teens worldwide already utilize Teen Accounts. Furthermore, 97% of users between the ages of 13 and 15 have maintained the protective settings, indicating a strong acceptance. In surveys, over 90% of parents expressed that the safeguards have been beneficial, highlighting the system's value in enhancing trust and safety online.

Though the social media giant acknowledges the ongoing difficulties associated with verifying age online, Instagram remains committed to improving its methodologies. By integrating AI technology, parental involvement, and app store verifications, the company aims to significantly reduce the chances of underage users bypassing these protective measures.

As Instagram continues to innovate and implement these tools, it underscores a broader commitment to fostering a secure space for young users in the digital realm, balancing technological solutions with comprehensive community support.
