Android Users React to Sudden Phone App Interface Redesign

27 Aug 2025

The recent overhaul of the Android Phone app has stirred mixed reactions among users, leaving some in dismay over the drastic interface changes. Without prior notification, the redesigned app rolled out updates featuring notably oversized buttons for key functions such as ending calls, muting, and using the speakerphone. This sudden alteration has caught many off guard, with several users expressing their surprise and frustration across platforms like Reddit and X.

Unexpected Changes and User Reactions

The redesign ushers in significant modifications, swapping out traditional features for new ones that resemble those found in iOS. Notably, the incoming call controls now require a slide-to-answer or reject mechanism. The updated app displays horizontal separators in the contacts and call-history layout, which some have described as 'blocky and oversized.' The bright red End Call button, in particular, has been labeled as garish and distracting by many users.

Despite the backlash, a segment of the user base appreciates the redesign for its enhanced clarity and improved accessibility features. However, the lack of options to revert most changes has been a sticking point. As an alternative, some users have discovered that settings allow the swipe-to-answer feature to revert to a single tap. Others, less content with the changes, prefer to uninstall updates altogether to bring back the previous version.

Material 3 Expressive Redesign and Future Outlook

Google rationalizes the updates as part of its broader Material 3 Expressive Redesign strategy. As part of this initiative, the Favorites and Recent calls have been consolidated into a new Home tab, equipped with a carousel for top contacts. Meanwhile, the keypad now occupies a dedicated tab with a set of newly rounded buttons.

The swiftness of the rollout, coupled with the absence of more flexible opt-in or opt-out options, has certainly provoked a significant online response. Whether Google plans to introduce more customization options or roll back certain elements in response to the feedback remains unclear. As the digital conversation continues, Android users remain eager to witness potential adjustments and improvements that might follow in the app's trajectory.
