Google Expands Android Cross-Device Services

Google has recently expanded its Android Cross-device services, initially announced in late May, to a broader audience, introducing features like Internet sharing and Call casting. This rollout is designed to enhance user connectivity across devices, making it easier for individuals to manage their digital interactions seamlessly.

Setting Up Cross-device Services

To access these new features, users can navigate to their Android device’s Settings app, then proceed to Google, followed by the All services tab, and finally Devices & sharing. Here, they can establish their “device group” by enabling preferences on devices that are signed into the same Google Account. It’s worth noting that any other accounts on these devices will be acknowledged but not included in the group.

The Cross-device services are compatible with Android 11 and newer versions, ensuring a wide range of users can take advantage of these enhancements.

Features of Call Casting and Internet Sharing

One of the standout features, Call casting, allows users to transfer calls between their devices that are signed into the same Google Account. Currently, this feature is available for Google Meet, enabling users to switch video calls effortlessly between an Android phone, tablet, or desktop browser with just a tap of the existing Cast icon.

Additionally, the Internet sharing feature, known as Instant hotspot, facilitates hotspot access between Android devices (excluding Samsung) and Chromebooks without the hassle of entering a password. This functionality utilizes Bluetooth and device location to streamline the connection process.

Managing Device Preferences

Users can easily manage these features with a simple toggle that allows them to enable or disable each option. The interface also provides visibility into “Your other devices” and categorizes them as “Added” or “Not added,” enhancing user control over their connected devices.

This rollout is being implemented with version 24.35.30 of Google Play services, which has been observed on Pixel and Samsung Galaxy devices. Google has indicated that users will receive new cross-device features promptly upon their release, further enriching the Android ecosystem.
