Google App Beta Adds Incognito Mode Shortcut and Visual Lookup Feature

02 Jul 2024

Android Authority has recently uncovered a new Incognito mode shortcut for the Google app on Android, specifically in version 15.26.34.29.arm64. This latest beta version is now available for download to testers who have opted into the Google Play Developer Program.

By tapping on the search box, users can reportedly bring up a new Chrome Incognito option directly above the keyboard. This feature aims to streamline the process of switching to Incognito Mode, replacing the current method of tapping on the profile picture in the top-right corner and then selecting the Incognito tab from the dropdown menu.

Enhanced Home Tab Interface

The update also introduces an enhanced look for the home tab on the Google app. Labels such as Home, Search, and Saved, which previously cluttered the interface, are now hidden. Only the icons remain visible, offering a more simplified and cleaner user experience.

While these features are reportedly available with the latest Google app beta update, some users, including staff members at Gadgets 360, have been unable to access them. This suggests that the changes might be rolling out gradually via server-side updates.

Circle to Search: A New Visual Lookup Feature

The Google app is also reportedly gaining support for Circle to Search, a new visual lookup feature powered by artificial intelligence (AI). Spotted in a beta version of the app, this feature may allow users to scan any QR codes or barcodes visible on their screen.

According to reports, a chip displaying the URL of the destination website may appear next to the scanned code. This option is said to be accessible by long-pressing the Home button and is expected to roll out to users on the stable channel at a later date.

These updates reflect Google's ongoing efforts to enhance user experience through innovative features and streamlined interfaces. As always, affiliate links may be automatically generated – see our ethics statement for details.
