Google Releases Authenticator 7.0 with Enhanced Security and New Features

09 Aug 2024

Google has initiated the rollout of version 7.0 of its Authenticator app, marking a significant update that aligns with the sleek aesthetics of Material 3 design. This redesign not only enhances the visual appeal but also introduces two noteworthy features aimed at improving user experience: the Privacy Screen and a convenient search option.

Privacy Screen: A New Layer of Security

The Privacy Screen is a pivotal addition, designed to bolster security by requiring users to authenticate their identity through lock screen credentials before accessing the app. This move reflects Google’s commitment to safeguarding sensitive information, especially considering the critical role the Authenticator app plays in managing two-factor authentication codes.

Enhanced Usability with Search Functionality

In addition to the Privacy Screen, users will now find a search functionality that streamlines the process of locating specific app security features, enhancing overall convenience. The QR code scanner has also received an upgrade, now equipped with a flash option to assist in reading codes in low-light conditions.

Strategic Shift Towards a Passwordless Future

Last year, Google made a strategic shift by storing one-time codes within user accounts rather than on individual devices, a step towards realizing a “passwordless” future. This change aims to alleviate the anxiety associated with losing access to authentication codes, particularly in cases of device theft or loss. For those who prefer to manage their codes differently, the option to disable sync or refrain from signing into a Google account remains available.

As the rollout progresses, users can expect to find the updated version 7.0 available for download through the Play Store, bringing with it a fresh interface and enhanced features designed to elevate the security and usability of the Authenticator app.

How to set up Google Authenticator on iPhone for Facebook?

1. Open the Facebook app on your iPhone and navigate to Settings & Privacy. 2. Go to Security and Login, then select Use two-factor authentication. 3. Choose Authentication App as your security method. 4. Facebook will display a QR code; open the Google Authenticator app on your iPhone. 5. Tap the '+' button, scan the QR code displayed on Facebook. 6. Google Authenticator will generate a 6-digit code; enter this code into Facebook to complete the setup.

How to remove Google Authenticator for Facebook?

1. Open the Facebook app and go to Settings & Privacy. 2. Navigate to Security and Login and select Use two-factor authentication. 3. Turn off the Authentication App by choosing a different two-factor authentication method or disabling 2FA altogether. 4. Confirm your choice by following the on-screen instructions. Note: Removing Google Authenticator will make your account less secure, so it is recommended to set up another 2FA method if you choose to disable it.
