For years, the landscape of Android Auto applications has remained relatively unchanged, with developers often constrained by a rigid template system. However, recent regulatory scrutiny has prompted Google to reassess its approach amid growing concerns regarding competition laws in the European Union.
As reported by Reuters, the issue has its roots in Italy, where the app JuicePass, designed for electric vehicle charging, faced obstacles due to its incompatibility with Google’s prescribed app templates. This situation led to legal challenges, with the Italian courts previously siding against Google, highlighting that the tech giant’s practices may favor its own navigation services, such as Maps and Waze, over third-party applications.
In 2021, Google was penalized in Italy for its handling of JuicePass, which was unable to launch on Android Auto due to these restrictive templates. Despite Google’s claims that the app did not conform to existing standards, the situation raised alarms about potential violations of EU competition regulations.
EU Court Advocate General's Opinion
Recently, EU Court Advocate General Laila Medina expressed that Google’s practices “may be in breach of competition rules.” This statement adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing debate, especially considering that Google has gradually relaxed some of its restrictions on Android Auto apps over time.
Even before the 2021 fine, Google had begun to diversify the types of applications permitted on Android Auto, including navigation tools. This shift theoretically opened the door for JuicePass to join the platform; however, the app remains unavailable. Initially, Google cited security concerns as a reason for the app’s absence.
Google's Response
In response to the Advocate General’s opinion, Google issued a statement indicating its awareness of the situation and its ongoing efforts to enhance the Android Auto experience:
We note the opinion of the Advocate General and await the final decision of the Court. Since this case started, we have worked to add the template Enel asked for, and many similar apps are already available globally on Android Auto.
