Valv Enhances Android Privacy with Free, Open-Source Encryption App

Valv: Encrypted Gallery Vault

In the realm of safeguarding your cherished memories, Android users have a plethora of options to consider. While premium applications like Cryptomator and simpler alternatives such as Safe Space have been previously highlighted, our current focus shifts toward a solution tailored specifically for images and videos.

For those who may not have access to built-in encryption tools—like Samsung’s Secure Folder—or prefer not to rely on proprietary software, a promising alternative has emerged: Valv. This free and open-source application offers a straightforward approach to encrypting photos and videos on your Android device.

Valv enables users to establish an encrypted vault for their media files, ensuring that sensitive content remains secure. The encryption process employs the ChaCha20 algorithm, with keys generated through PBKDF2 utilizing HMAC-SHA512, details of which can be explored on its GitHub page.

One of the app’s standout features is its commitment to user privacy; it requires no permissions, making it an appealing choice for those wary of data sharing. Here are some notable functionalities that Valv offers:

  • Separate vaults with different passwords
  • Organizational capabilities through folders
  • Support for GIFs, images, videos, and text files
  • Option to delete files from the system gallery after importing them into the vault
  • User-friendly interface

Upon testing the app, I found that it prevents screenshots, enhancing security. To begin, users must create a robust password, which serves as the gateway to the main interface. It’s crucial to choose a strong password, as the effectiveness of the encrypted vault hinges on this initial step.

While the app’s functionality is solid, the user interface leaves room for improvement. Currently, it presents a straightforward but somewhat dated experience, which may not resonate with all users. However, the ability to delete files from the system gallery post-import is a thoughtful feature for those looking to keep their media both hidden and encrypted.

Valv is under active development, and the project welcomes new contributors and users to help it evolve. If the concept resonates with you, consider supporting the developer or contributing to the project on its GitHub page.

Install Valv

Valv is readily available on both F-Droid and the Google Play Store. Alternatively, users can download the APK directly from its GitHub releases section for added convenience.
