Desura is a gaming platform that shares some similarities with Steam, but this is far more oriented to lone developers, mods and independent games. You can buy tons of games from Desura, download demos for free and install mods without any problem. All you need to do is to register, and then you can access your account from any PC. The client is somewhat less complete than that of, for example, Steam, but it does come with its own social components, such as adding friends, starting conversations with them, and has loads of details about your games. One of the most interesting things about Desura is the possibility of buying video games during their development, in what is known as 'alphafunding'. This way, you can support independent developers so they can get their projects finished. Desura is growing more and more and is fast becoming a viable alternative to the larger platforms.
