OpenTyrian is a free open source version of the classic Tyrian, a vertical shooter game where you're the captain of a spaceship. You'll advance through levels that are filled with enemies and other dangerous things while shooting basically anything that moves. The gameplay is typical for this genre: your spaceship is located on the bottom of the screen and the enemies will appear from above and from the sides. You'll move and shoot using the keyboard. This requires a lot of talent, since you'll face more than a dozen enemies firing simultaneously and will have to avoid being shot. The game has five episodes (each with a final boss) and lots of different guns you can use (you'll always be carrying two). This is in story mode. In arcade mode you go on missions one after another without following any storyline. OpenTyrian is a very fun vertical shooter that shoot 'em up (SHUMP) fans will love, especially since this genre hasn't been very productive lately. Luckily, we always have the classics.
