One way to prevent others from accessing a particular hard drive (and thus accessing the private files stored on it) is to block access to the drive itself. Cyber-D's DriveHard is a very simple way to hide whatever units you want on your computer, like hard drives, CDs, DVDs, or external drives. All you have to do is click the units you want to hide from public view and close the window. These units will be automatically hidden and will no longer show up in your Windows Explorer. When you want to undo this action in order to access the units again, simply run the application and uncheck the corresponding boxes.
