Protocol

N/A

3 (1084)

Protocol is an action and speed arcade game where players control a fugitive who is escaping by motorcycle, while tons of security androids try to knock him off the road. Players can control the direction of the motorcycle with the arrow keys, while they can use the mouse to point and shoot their laser gun. However, the laser gun can only be shot in a straight line, so you'll have to be parallel to the androids to finish them off. Of course, things will be easier at the beginning, where you only have to face small androids. But you will soon have to confront rival motorcycles and larger robots. Luckily, you can also improve your weapons, moving from the first laser gun to much more devastating machines. Protocol is an entertaining game whose strong point is its spectacular graphics, whose every pixel reminds you of cyberpunk. It's not for nothing this game was shown at Gamejolt's Cyberpunk Jam.

Ultima Ratio Regum

Mark R Johnson

4 (669)

Ultima Ratio Regum is a very special roguelike where the main focus is not combat or traps, as with the majority of other games in this genre. Instead, you'll be tasked with finding evidence scattered around the world in order to uncover an intellectual conspiracy to rewrite the history of mankind, from religion and customs to types of government and more. When you start a new game, Ultima Ratio Regum begins by generating a whole universe. Basically, the game generates an entire galaxy, planets and all. Then you choose the planet where you want to play. You can indicate certain preferences for your planet, such as the preferred type of government, culture, religious beliefs, and legal system. Or, if you prefer, you can randomize it. Once you've created the world, you can start playing. In the beginning, as in most roguelikes, the game might be a little confusing. Luckily, Ultima Ratio Regum includes a sort of built-in tutorial that explains all the controls available to you in each moment. No matter what, from the beginning, you can move around the world freely and begin your investigation. Ultima Ratio Regum is a totally unique roguelike with an ambitious premise. Visually speaking, this game has a certain charm that goes far beyond its ASCII style, such as its procedurally-generated ANSI illustrations. And that's what's at the core of this game: everything is procedurally-generated, so no game is alike, and you'll never get bored.

Effing Dead – The Broken Path

TheShortAndTheTall

3 (546)

Effing Dead – The Broken Path is a third-person horror and action game that according to its own developers was directly inspired by Resident Evil 4, even though it's actually much more similar to the more recent Dead Space. You control the last surviving defense clone on a spaceship sent to a distant planet to find new water sources. Before long you discover that something terrible has happened on the ship when you come across crew members who've turned into lobotomized creatures determined to destroy you. Fortunately, the clone protagonist has a service pistol and, more importantly, a powerful V-blade, a knife that can be used to finish off stunned enemies in hand-to-hand combat. As you advance through the spacecraft you have to solve small puzzles in addition to facing tons of enemies. Fortunately, in order to finish off all the enemies, you'll find many more weapons such as shotguns and grenades along the way. The combat style in Effing Dead – The Broken Path is very well developed. You can destroy your enemies’ heads to kill them off quickly, or aim at their limbs to slow them down and then finish them off with melee attacks. Effing Dead – The Broken Path is a fun third-person action game with amazing graphics and a very interesting plot. In short, a free game that borders on truly outstanding.

Pioneerz is a pure 16-bit style RPG where you step into the shoes of a pioneer in a new fantasy world. In it you'll enjoy a 'sandbox' experience where your main goal, instead of following a particular storyline, is to protect the city. Thus, one of your most important goals will be to gather resources to make your town grow and become self-sufficient. However, it won't be easy, as you'll run into lots of enemies who will try to make things hard for you. And as if that weren't enough, you'll have to constantly watch out for their attacks. You'll be able to see the world evolve as you move forward: plants and trees growing, animals reproducing and, of course, your town getting bigger with time – if you manage to keep it safe from your enemies' attacks, that is. Pioneerz is a unique and entertaining RPG that will let you enjoy a slightly different experience from other JRPGs in delightful SNES-style graphics.

It's a conversational graphic adventure that will have you working on some of the cases that only Dr. House can solve. You, of course, will control the Doctor, with the rest of the staff from the series (Cameroon, Chase, Foreman...) at your beck and call. Deadly Sin is an RPG similar to the great Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo classics. In it you live the adventure of Lorelei, a humble young girl who one day discovers she's the heir to a powerful empire. The gameplay is reminiscent of classic games like Final Fantasy and Lufia. It doesn't feel like an actually old game, though, thanks in part to the ability to deactivate automatic encounters and to the more dynamic turn-based battles. Deadly Sin lasts approximately 30 hours and features a professional soundtrack recorded exclusively for this game as well as an exquisite character design with an anime style. Deadly Sin is a highly entertaining RPG. Anyone who enjoyed playing Final Fantasy VI, Lufia, or Chrono Trigger back in the day will definitely love it.

Castlevania: Simon's Destiny

Batandy

3 (512)

Castlevania: Simon's Destiny is a standalone mod that allows you to relive the experience and adventures of the original Castlevania, the NES one, from a first-person perspective and with the Doom engine. This means that, among other things, the 2D settings of Konami's foundational title have become spectacular 3D labyrinths that you will be able to go through at your leisure, whip in hand. As mentioned, Castlevania: Simon's Destiny is a standalone mod. This means that you will not need to have any Doom II or The Ultimate Doom files in order to play. What you will need to have installed is GZDoom. As is common with these types of mods, simply drag the Castlevania.ipk3 file to the GZDoom executable to start playing. Again, it is important to emphasize that you will not need anything else. Unlike other similar mods, this one does not require any additional files. Although Castlevania: Simon's Destiny does not attempt to be an exact 3D copy of the original Castlevania, it does stay fairly true to its spirit. The game begins with Simon Belmont, the protagonist, outside the castle. As soon as you walk through the doors, you will be faced with zombies, skeletons, wolves, bats and other much more dangerous enemies. Fortunately, from the beginning of the adventure, you will have your whip, which you can use to take down your enemies from a safe distance. You will also be able to use the legendary secondary weapons of the saga, such as knives, the stopwatch or axes. Some mods offer a small taste of what is to come or simply fall a little short. That is not the case with Castlevania: Simon's Destiny. The game offers a complete experience, which can easily take you four or five hours. Throughout the adventure, you will be able to go through all the legendary settings of the first Castlevania and, more importantly, you will be able to face its most memorable bosses. Due to the change of perspective from 2D to 3D, in addition, battles against these special enemies will be as novel as they are complex. You will need a lot of skill to defeat some of the tougher opponents. Download Castlevania: Simon's Destiny to discover one of the best combinations of video games imaginable: Doom and Castlevania. It is a spectacular mod in every way and a project that has clearly had a lot of effort and care put into it; all this in just over 70MB.

Endless Online is a multiplayer role-playing game in which you can create and personalize your own character (or characters) and dive into a fantasy world full of adventures and other players. One thing that really makes the game stand out is its unique visual style, made up of pixelated, manga-inspired models. Overall, it's quite pleasant and charming. Combat is not one of the game's strong points, but one great thing is that it's easy to communicate with the other characters and players. Although there is a level-based skill system in Endless Online, your relationships with other players are the most important part. Endless Online is a fun game that consumes very little memory and is totally free. It's an excellent way to pass the time on any PC.

Pixel Piracy is a combination of strategy, simulation, and roguelike games in 2D where players control the captain of a pirate ship, who has to perform all the duties befitting that post. Early on in the game, you must create your pirate ship, building it from scratch with blocks you find in your inventory. In other words, you can unleash your imagination and build your ship exactly how you want it. But a pirate captain needs more than just a vessel, and you'll also have to hire a crew. To do this you have to go through the game's taverns hiring pirates who strike you as up to scratch. That said, keep in mind that each pirate you take on will demand wages and you'll have to pay them. While you’re in the city you can also purchase different equipment for your crew, ranging from new swords and stronger weapons to hooks for boarding other ships. Once you have a ship and a crew you can travel the world trying to plunder beaches, enemies, towns, and anything else you can find. Pixel Piracy is a fun standalone game that combines several distinct genres to form an exquisite whole, and when you throw in the pirate setting, this game should never go out of style.

To do so, you'll need to collect the gold coins that are scattered throughout each level. All the levels have crazy challenging designs, to the point where sometimes N: The Way of the Ninja feels more like a puzzle game than a platform game. Above all else, you'll have to pay attention and use your skills in order to progress. The most notable characteristics of N: The Way of the Ninja are its physics and its hellish difficulty, which is sometimes reminiscent of Super Meat Boy. The tool is very simple to use: just watch the tutorial and you'll be ready to go. N: The Way of the Ninja is a super fun platform game that has paid versions for other consoles but is free on PC. Cart Life is a management game in which the player takes the role of an ordinary person, perhaps a little unfortunate, who lives in a small town in the western United States and makes a living to get ahead each day. The game features quite a handful of playable characters, and each of them have their strengths and weaknesses. One, Andros, is a Ukrainian immigrant with a strong addiction to cigarettes (defect) which is able to eat anything and is very good worker (benefits). Each of these characters has its own objectives, which will be a series of goals in the lives of our protagonists. Some are more short-term, such as finding a place to live, and other long-term. The main source of income for your characters comes from selling on the street (hence the name of the game), but you will soon discover that the permits necessary for this are not exactly cheap. It is the player's choice to decide whether it is worth the risk of selling unlicensed. Among the details to consider when your avatar looks for work, is the buying habits of customers and the type of customers you will be serving. Some of them drop succulent tips and we must know how to win. Cart Life is a reflective management game with lots of depth, which has won numerous awards at independent festivals. And for good reason. You are faced with a different experience that everyone should try.

The Reconstruction

3 (654)

The Reconstruction is a traditional turn-based combat role-playing game in which you head up a group of more than a dozen adventurers who form the crew of a pirate ship. The adventure begins on board that ship, but it won't be long before you're exploring to the limits of the outer world. In fact, as you recruit new characters for your group of heroes, you'll start to discover a story that includes everything up to minor gods. The attributes of the characters in your group are not modeled in typical RPG fashion. In place of force, agility, health, magic, etc., you'll be using values such as body, mind, and soul. These are the attributes that can be improved with experience and that, eventually, will help you defeat your most powerful enemies. Combat itself does follow a more traditional style: you'll need to move your units over a grid and give orders so that they can overcome their adversaries, which will typically outnumber your crew. The Reconstruction is a traditional role-playing game with a significant amount of gameplay (more than 20 hours) made with rather outdated graphics. In any case, it's an outstanding title that introduces many intriguing concepts into the RPG genre.

Burn and Turn is an arcade game set in a medieval world full of spells, knights stuffed into armours, walking skeletons and fire-breathing dragons, in which you will have to take on the role of the last of all of these and put an end to all of the others. The game's setup is very simple: your dragon finds himself protecting a tower at the right of the screen, and all kinds of enemies will appear on the left side of the screen trying to get to him. So, your goal will be to incinerate all those who try to get close to the tower, using the fireballs that the dragon can launch. The more that you are able to resist, not only will more (and stronger) enemies appear, but you will also be able to get upgrades for your dragon's fireballs. So, thanks to the sorcerers and merchants that you are also able to kill, you can get double fireballs... and even a type of ray gun. Burn and Turn is a frenetic action game which is ideal for playing fast games of no more than ten minutes. Its rough graphics, which clearly pay homage to 8 bit games, are more than compensated for by a gameplay that provides straight-up fun for anyone who is able to look past its pixels.
