AdvanceMAME is a fork of the well-known arcade emulator MAME. As its name suggests, this version contains a few more features than the original, such as the capability to run games in their native resolution so they can be used with CRT monitors, and to emulate consoles and PCs as well as arcade games. AdvancedMAME combines several independent software modules. Just like the original MAME, the core of the app doesn't include a default graphic interface. That being said, it does have an AdvanceMENU tool that shows your ROM's thumbnails and can launch them. This menu can be adapted to CRT monitor resolutions, which makes it a great option if you're looking for software that doesn't use tons of processing power to connect a low-performance PC to an arcade monitor. Not only that, but Advance MAME is based on MAME version 0.106, which means it's compatible with all its romsets and anything else compatible with that version of MAME. All of that means Advance MAME can emulate the vast majority of arcade games, all the way to games released in the 90s.

From mGalaxy's settings you can also configure any controller you have connected to the computer or keyboard and can even change the frontend's skin by choosing different colors and styles. Once inside mGalaxy itself, you'll find a perfectly designed interface that makes it easy to start playing. AppleWin is an emulator that lets you convert your modern Windows PC into an old-school Apple II. The emulator runs in a small window by default, but you can maximize the interface to make it fullscreen if you prefer. The first thing you have to do when you open AppleWin is to choose the boot disk for the emulator. This step takes just a single click. Once you've done that, you can start to use the computer exactly like a real one. In other words, you can even play classic videogames in its native environment. AppleWin is a lightweight and easy-to-use emulator that takes up very little space, doesn't require installation, and uses very little resources. One of the main problems with using Mednafen is that it has no interface and it requires users to drag the ROMs directly to the emulator's executable to be able to play. Fortunately, those days are over. In order to use Mednaffe you'll need to unzip the contents of the compressed file inside the same folder where you have Mednafen. If you don't have both executables inside the same folder, you'll get an error message. Once you've completed this simple step, you'll be able to access a straightforward and user-friendly interface, in which all its features are clearly visible and perfectly separated into different tabs. You'll be able to configure settings for the entire emulation system in general or, if you prefer, for some specific emulators separately. This second option is particularly useful, since it makes it possible to easily customize your gaming experience when emulating PlayStation or Sega Saturn titles. Plus, it also makes it much more convenient to configure a gamepad. Mednaffe is a great add-on for Mednafen, that actually improves what's already one of the best multisystem emulators available for Windows. Thanks to its great interface, it makes configuring your experience with the emulation of any of system faster, more convenient and easier than ever.

PCem is one of the most advanced classic computer emulators on the market. It's compatible with dozens of classic computers from the 80s and 90s. To emulate these systems, it's necessary to have the appropriate ROMs for each one. These ROMs are not officially offered by the emulator developers, so you'll have to find them on your own. On the Internet, you can find complete packs that allow you to emulate all the systems that PCem is compatible with. After adding the ROM you want to the corresponding folder, just go to the program. There, you can start the system emulation. You can adjust a wide range of parameters for the emulation, including the processor, RAM memory, graphics card, network card, mouse, sound card, and screen. After starting it, you can install the appropriate operating system. This step is key, since the ROM only provides a virtual environment on which to run software, just like a fully assembled physical computer that's still without an operating system. After adding the required operating system, you can emulate all kinds of software without any problems, including old programs and games. So, if you need to emulate software from decades ago, downloading PCem is an excellent option to do so.

ExtraMAME is a smaller version of the M.A.M.E. emulator (Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator). This popular modular emulator allows you to emulate thousands of classic arcade games. Now, with ExtraMAME, you can play all these games on your computer with a program that's lighter and even easier to use. ExtraMAME offers a more compact and easier-to-use interface, although you can also use the full-size interface of the original MAME by running the corresponding .exe file. ExtraMAME is compatible with all MAME games and gives you the option to avoid using the original interface, which was overly complex. To emulate some consoles or arcades, it's necessary to download the corresponding BIOS for each. To do so, search for them on the Internet and save them in the ROMs folder of the emulator installation directory. The BIOS are left in .zip format, and the program takes care of decompressing them. This is also true for the games, since only a few are included with the emulator, so you'll have to look for them on the Internet or use copies of your original games. In short, if you want to play thousands of classic games on your computer, ExtraMAME is much more convenient and accessible than using the original emulator.

Flycast Dojo is a fork of Flycast, one of the most powerful Sega Dreamcast, Naomi, and Atomiswave emulators available. Its main objective, and what differentiates it from the original Flycast, is that it includes a series of features for online gaming, with a special emphasis on the competitive mode and holding Dreamcast game tournaments online. At the interface level, Flycast Dojo is virtually identical to the original Flycast, with a few subtle differences reflecting the new online gameplay features that have been added. In the main window of the emulator, you'll see a small tab in the upper left corner, from which you can join online games started by other players or start your own. This tab, by default, is in offline mode, but you can change it at any time. Although it's pretty easy to use, Flycast Dojo has a good number of tutorials on its official website so you can get familiar with some of its newer features. In any case, playing online with a friend is as simple as starting a game in Host mode, copying the Match Code, and sharing it with your friend, who can then enter it in the appropriate field when starting the game in Join mode. That's it. Like this, playing any Dreamcast game online is a breeze. In the settings, you'll also find some new features, most of which are oriented to online play. From the Netplay tab, you can modify some of the default options. For example, you can activate or deactivate the chat, which makes it easy to talk to anyone you're playing with. If you prefer not to talk with them, simply deactivate this option. Here, you can also choose your username or your preferred way to connect. Flycast Dojo is an absolutely outstanding Dreamcast emulator. And the reason why is very simple: Flycast Dojo is a fork that improves upon Flycast, which in turn is a fork that improved upon Reicast, one of the best Dreamcast emulators for PC. Emulator fans tend to have the same problems when trying to catalogue and browse through their tons of folders full of ROMS. EmulationStation is here to solve that messy problem by making things a bit easier when it comes to organizing your emulators. It offers an intuitive, minimalist front end that lets you access all your games and machines from a single interface. It's also got crisp visuals that manage your emulators into a one pack, following salon aesthetics by using a gamepad control system. Compatible with almost a hundred different emulators, it detects each console allowing you to scrap games you already have. What this means to you, is that you can automatically download game cases and related gaming specs from the internet for each title and convert your menu into your own complete database. One thing, though, is that you'll have to remember that the emulators themselves are not included in EmulationStation, so you'll have to link them manually through a configuration file that includes the root folder where you first installed them. Taking this into account, RetroArch would make a fine companion to EmulationStation as an all-in-one that includes several emulators in the same pack. EmulationStation is a great way to keep your whole collection of emulators organized in one place. It's also completely customizable however you wish, so it's always going to look good on your set up. Especially when you play in fullscreen version, whether on your monitor or widescreen television. Actually, it's interface adapts to any resolution, no matter how high.

MasterGear is a game emulator for SEGA's 8-bit consoles, including portable consoles like the legendary Game Gear or desktop consoles like Master System and some of its predecessors, such as the SG1000, SC3000, and SF7000. With this emulator, all the games played on these consoles run smoothly, without downloading BIOS or any additional programs. The only thing you need, of course, are the ROMs for the games you want to play. As usual, it's best to have the cartridges for the ROMs you want to emulate. Some strengths of MasterGear are that it's lightweight and very easy to use. The emulator only occupies 100 KB. To start playing, just double-click and select a ROM. That's it. In just a few seconds, you can start playing any of the many classic SEGA games. Just because this emulator is simple and lightweight doesn't mean it has limited options, either. MasterGear lets you adjust the screen resolution to your liking, as well as the sound quality, game controller, and controls. And you can do all this on a classic interface that couldn't be easier to navigate. MasterGear is an excellent emulator for old school SEGA consoles. With it, you can play hundreds of classic and truly iconic games. Even better, the emulator's source code is highly compatible, so you can use it with more than a dozen different operating systems and platforms.

The program is able to perfectly emulate all these systems: NES, Famicom Disk System, Super Nintendo, Super Game Boy, Game Boy, Game Boy Color, Game Boy Advance, Game Boy Player, SG-1000, SC-3000, Master System, Game Gear, Mega Drive, Mega CD, PC Engine, SuperGrafx, MSX, MSX2, ColecoVision, Neo Geo Pocket, Neo Geo Pocket Color, WonderSwan, WonderSwan Color, SwanCrystal, Pocket Challenge V2. In total, Higan will allow you to emulate more than a dozen different systems and, even better, it will allow you to do so with maximum fidelity. Unlike other emulators, you will need to download BIOS for all the systems you want to emulate. In addition, you must bear in mind that one of the objectives of the emulator is to offer a faithful experience to the original, so you will not find spectacular image filters or anything like that. You can adjust the resolution and little else. One of the features that could not go amiss is the savestates. Higan allows you to keep up to five quick saves, which you can access with a single click. Admittedly, this feature was not available on any of the original consoles, but it is incredibly useful and no modern emulator can do without it. The same applies to resolution scaling. Games from the 1990s were not designed to be played on 2K or 4K monitors, but that doesn't mean you can't see them in all their glory on such displays today. Higan is an excellent multi-system emulator, which will allow you to easily enjoy thousands and thousands of games for more than a dozen different platforms. From the source code of Higan, two other great emulators emerged: BSNES and ARES, both with different features, which perfectly complement this marvel of emulation.

DEmul is a Dreamcast emulator that takes over from Chankast, another application to run Dreamcast games on PC which has now been abandoned. DEmul emulates games not just for Dreamcast, but also for the Atomiswave and NAOMI systems. However you do need a Dreamcast BIOS to use it, and this is not included with the emulator. For now, DEmul can perfectly emulate over one hundred games including: Marvel VS. Capcom, Crazy Taxi, King of Fighters, Sega GT, Sonic Adventure, Star Wars Demolition, Virtua Fighter 3 and Virtua Tennis 2.

ScummVM lets you use modern computers to play an endless number of classic 'point and click' graphic adventure games that were most popular at the beginning of the 90s and developed by LucasArts, Sierra, or Westwood, among others. To use the program you will need the original files of the game you want to play, which you look for on ScummVM and add to your library. Once there, you can change the graphic and audio configurations, and even customize the way you want to play the game using post-processing filters. The list of compatible games is endless, and with every new version, new graphic engines are added in addition to the well-known Scumm system developed by LucasArts and used in games like Monkey Island, Day of the Tentacle, or Sam & Max; or the SCI that Sierra used in the King's Quest saga, just to mention a few. What's really interesting is that many of these games, considered now 'abandonware', have been distributed freely by their original creators, so you can download and play games like Temptress, DreamWeb or Flight of the Amazon Queen, all of which are available on Uptodown. ScummVM is a great tool to remember old classics on modern computers, with the extra advantage of modifying aspects of the graphics and sounds through an easy interface.
