Mayhem Triple is a spectacular action and platform game in which players take the role of a nameless hero who has to face the invading hordes of killer bunnies from the future, who have come to our time to... well... destroy the world for some strange reason. However, the best thing about Mayhem Triple isn't its crazy story, but rather its excellent gameplay. As you control the hero of the day you will have to beat a series of two-dimensional scenes where you will come face to face with tons of enemies and overcome ridiculous jumps and obstacles. You can use your mouse to control your character's sights and aim wherever you want, while you use the arrow keys to move the character himself. You will find a considerable arsenal of weapons to defend yourself, including pistols, machine guns, and shotguns, which you can shoot while you are running or, Max Payne-style, you can jump into the air and shoot as you fall. In addition, the protagonist can run up the different walls in the scenes Parkour-style, which gives the game a very fun platform touch. Mayhem Triple is an outstanding game which, though it is completely free, could definitely sell for a lot of money. It might not have the best graphics out there, but this game is definitely better than a lot of others that people want to charge you for.

Samurai Jazz is a 2D action game with an 8-bit aesthetic where you control a modern samurai mixed up in an adventure full of katanas, blood, death, and good music. The gameplay is very fun and direct, allowing you to take part in mortal sword duels that won’t last longer than a blow. This means that one strike is all it takes to end your enemies, but a single blow from them could also send you to your grave. Although the main point in Samurai Jazz is hand-to-hand combat itself, the game also makes room for some platform-style gameplay during certain parts where you’ll have to jump from side to side. Samurai Jazz is an entertaining action game that, thanks to its 8-bit look, will surely appeal to veteran gamers. On top of that, the combat system is as complicated as it is fun.

Alios is a 'metroidvania'-style action platformer where you play a soldier packed into a mysterious spacesuit, who wakes up in a hibernation chamber on a spaceship, armed to the teeth. As soon as you get out of the chamber and start exploring the ship, you'll realize why you're armed with two machine-guns: the ship is infested with aliens, and there seem to be no other humans around. Fortunately, these aliens are pretty easy to kill, as they're not too quick, and ... well, they don't have machine-guns like you do. Meanwhile, besides killing enemies, you'll need to solve a few puzzles in order to keep moving forward through the narrow passages of the spaceship. Visually, Alios is quite an interesting title; it has a simple character and scenario designs, but it's still nice-looking. The blood effects on enemies are, on their own, excellent. Alios is a really fun action and platform game that puts aside any narrative element to focus on frantic and direct action.

Night Slashers X is a completely free remake of the classic console game Night Slasher, for computers. This 'beat em up' is similar to the 'Final Fight'; in it, players take on the role of one of the bloody vampire-killers. In the game, the three protagonists embark on an adventure to terminate the plans of the evil King Zarutz, who is intent on turning the entire planet into a kingdom of monsters and living dead. In his pursuit he is, of course, aided by hordes of zombies and mutants. This way, our lead trio of characters will have to face hordes of enemies which range from classic zombies and fire elements, to vampires and Frankenstein monsters, all the way to werewolves and mummies. The best part of the game is the sheer number and amazingness of the attacks available to you, and they will almost always end with lots of blood splattered on your screen. The game, like most in its genre, can be enjoyed in co-op with friends. Plus, depending on who the main character is, you'll be able to see up to three different endings. Night Slashers X is a very fun action game that comes with eight different levels, six types of guns, dozens of different hits, over twenty different enemies, and enough material to keep you entertained for hours on end.

Retro Blazer is an old-school first-person action game whose gameplay is very similar to Doom and whose graphics are like Megaman's. It offers a frenetic experience where you have to shoot like crazy and dodge like mad. The gameplay is modeled on shooters from the 90s that don't require using the mouse: you control your character and shoot using only the keyboard. Also, unlike what happens in most contemporary video games, in Retro Blazer the key is to move fast, shoot faster, and dodge the enemy bullets (which you can see coming). The game's Alpha version has just seven levels, which you can roll through at high speed killing the hundreds of enemies you come across with your powerful three-weapon arsenal: pistol, machine gun, and shotgun. They're classic but effective weapons that, inside the game, are very eye-catching. Graphically, Retro Blazer is strange because, despite its old-school aesthetic (with pixelated characters and weapons), the game's look is stupendous. This is in part thanks to the colorful levels and the beauty of some of the game's designs. Retro Blazer is a very fun first-person action game that leaves today's FPS conventions aside to offer a much more hectic experience that Doom and Duke Nukem 3D fans will love.

Sapience is a first-person action RPG that shares a similar aesthetic with games from the early 90s such as Wolfenstein 3D and the legendary Blake Stone from Apogee Software. Unlike these titles, though, Sapience's playability falls somewhere between a first-person shooter and RPG. On one hand you'll have to face tons of enemies and beat them in a shootout, and on the other manage an inventory and a character index that will allow you to level up your attributes and gain experience. The adventure is set on a spaceship that, similar to what happens in Doom, becomes infested with alien demons whose main goal is to end the main character's life. Luckily, you'll have a special suit and an arsenal of weapons to stop them. Sapience is a very fun mix of RPG and action that will surely win over the nostalgics' hearts thanks to its marked retro aesthetic. And it just might end up convincing other players, too, with its more-than-competent mechanics.

Unvanquished is an offshoot from the classic game Tremulous. Like Tremulous, it is a mix of first-person shooter and RTS, and puts humans and aliens into fierce head to head battle from which only one side can emerge victorious. Both sides are controlled by a team of players and each has their own particular strengths and weaknesses. Humans have futuristic weaponry that gives them the advantage over long distances, while the alien’s main strength lies in blending themselves into their surroundings. However, Unvanquished is not all running and shooting. A very important part of the game is to secure each side's base. To do so, you can use different structures and items, with which can defeat your enemies without ever having to pull the trigger. It is the combination of first-person shooter and RTS that makes Unvanquished such a special game. That and the fact that it is under constant development, so that with each update the game gets several new features and improvements to everything from the graphics to the actual gameplay itself. Unvanquished is a great combination of action and strategy, that creates an excellent atmosphere in which to put humans and aliens in a confrontation from which only one side will escape with their lives.

Sombreros is a bird's eye view shooting game inspired by classics like 'Gun Smoke.' In it players advance through a setting where bad guys constantly appear out of every direction. All the enemies that appear on the screen (trigger-happy Mexicans with big sombreros) will try to shoot your poor character, whose only option is to defend himself. To do so you have a gun with infinite ammunition, which is never a bad thing, plus a sort of time bullet that can be activated at any time ... as long as you have enough enemy sombreros. The trick is that every time you kill an enemy you can pick up his sombrero, and for every sombrero you get, you can fire a shot in time bullet mode. Like this you have to advance slowly through the setting, killing all your enemies. Sombreros is a very fun action game that, even if it's short and simple, offers a straightforward gameplay that any player can immediately enjoy.

Violetland is a third-person action game from a bird's eye view. It's very similar to the classic game Crimsonland where you have to survive as long as you can by fighting endless hordes of mutants and zombies. You'll play as Violet, a young woman armed to the teeth and surrounded by creatures trying to eat her. Fortunately, when these creatures hit the ground from her shots, they also release new weapons and healing items. You'll be able to use lots of different weapons in this game: pistols, machine guns, assault rifles, shotguns, flamethrowers, grenades, and even miniature nuclear bombs. Use them wisely to kill the creatures before they kill you. Violetland is an action-packed game that, despite not having a lot of modes, offers a direct and fun enough gameplay to keep any player glued to the screen looking for a quick surge of adrenaline.

Voxelstein 3D is a first-person action game inspired on the classic Wolfenstein 3D, but with the pixelated graphics of the original upgraded to graphics made entirely of voxels. This change, which at first seems merely aesthetic, turns out to be very significant when you realize that any surface in Voxelstein 3D can be broken. In other words, you can make a hole in a door or a wall with a bomb, or even cut open the sky with your knife. Despite being inspired by Wolfenstein, the levels in Voxelstein 3D are totally different from Apogee's legendary game. In fact you'll find some rather disturbing images in some of the rooms in Voxelstein 3D, with, for example, pictures of George Bush hung on the walls along with other controversial figures from the history of the United States. Despite the disturbing images, Voxelstein 3D offers you a solid FPS playing experience and, most importantly, preserves the original weapons: a knife, pistol, machine gun, or sub-machine gun. Voxelstein 3D is a rather curious game where besides having to shoot lots of Nazis, you can make holes in any of the walls with the help of your knife or the grenades you'll find in the castle's secrets rooms.

Avalanche is a 3D action game set in the Final Fantasy VII universe where users play Tifa during her time as an activist in the terrorist group Avalanche. During most of the adventure, which takes you through locations that'll be familiar to fans of this saga, like the Mako Reactor or Cosmo Canyon, you have to fight dozens of enemies (all of them also old acquaintances). The Iron Giants and different beasts from the Final Fantasy universe have been added to the classic Shinra soldiers. In addition to the combat system, which enables you to do anything from simple punches to complex combos, in Avalanche you can also manage your character's other features. From a menu that's very similar to the one in the original game, you can view Tifa's inventory and attributes. You can also use certain objects (like potions) or change your weapon. One of the most surprising elements in Avalanche are the graphics, which are very similar to the models used in the original Final Fantasy VII's combats. These character models are considerably more detailed than the normal ones and look absolutely amazing in the game. Avalanche is a very fun action game that will surprise and please fans. It's still considered by many to be the best JRPG in history.

Total Anarchy is a third person action game that offers a bird's eye view. Not only it is practically identical to GTA2, but it also has a very similar gameplay. The game's storyline is also very similar to the first few Grand Theft Autos. That is to say, your adventure begins as a small time criminal that must complete small missions and then climb the hierarchy of the criminal world. Of course, during your criminal adventures, you have the possibility of doing everything that you want to in the enormous city that is open to being played. Thanks to the sandbox style of Total Anarchy, you can rob any car, run people over, get a lot of different types of weapons, confront the police, etc. Total Anarchy is a very similar to the first installments of GTA on a visual level, but its graphics are significantly better. The zooms, explosions, the model of some elements in some scenes, or the transitions from one zone to another show that the game is very well done. Total Anarchy is a awesome sandbox that is better than Grand Theft Auto in a lot of ways. Maybe it isn't as long as GTA: San Andreas, but it doesn't need to be.

Battle Capacity is a 2D 1v1 fighting game where you can choose from 15 different creatures eager to throw punches at each other. Although the design of these creatures is totally original, some of them could seriously be from any of the new versions of the Pokémon franchise. You can play Battle Capacity in one-player mode; make things tougher by playing against the A.I. in adventure mode; or play against a friend using the same keyboard. To play more comfortably, you could also plug in two controllers. Besides the uniqueness of its characters, Battle Capacity’s most striking feature is its graphics. Each character is exquisitely hand-drawn with a wide range of animations that would put many paid titles to shame. Even the settings look stunning. Battle Capacity is an outstanding fighting game in every single aspect. Its variety of fighters and special attacks, multiple play modes, and excellent graphics give it the potential to become one of those games that you always keep handy, ready to play.

Last of the Patriots is an action and adventure game set in a future full of war, though it doesn't focus on the war itself. Rather, it's about the effects war has on those who fight it. You'll control Sergeant Johnson, a man who loses his entire team in an emergency landing for a routine mission. After that, you'll see how he reacts to the enemy and learn the background of his story in a flashback. Your goal during the game, then, is to help Johnson survive his complicated life as a military man, facing real problems such as alcoholism and a lack of self-esteem. Of course, you'll also have to shoot from time to time in order to survive, but that's neither the main nor the most important part. Last of the Patriots is a very special game. Despite its lackluster graphics, it has a great story and a much more interesting message than your average war game.

Sangre por Sangre is a free first-person shooter where you control a police officer who embarks on a solitary war against a drug cartel on the streets of Mexico. You'll advance through different levels set in warehouses, houses, streets, etc., all of which are well-guarded by members of the cartel, who are on the lookout to put an end to your brave effort. Luckily, as you progress through the game you'll find more and more weapons. You'll start off with just a pistol, but soon you'll uncover various types of machine guns, shotguns, and even a sniper rifle. Sangre por Sangre has spectacular graphics, including outstanding character designs and carefully-done lighting effects. The only problem here is with the animations, which are a little crude, featuring characters jumping through the air in an unrealistic manner. Sangre por Sangre is an action-packed FPS that allows you to come face to face with tons of enemies, use different weapons, and advance through a pretty interesting story. The game also includes an online cooperative mode.

Apart from the single player mode, Cube Arena comes with a multiplayer mode so you can shoot at other users over the internet. Night of the Cephalopods is an old-school shooter where you have to survive incessant attacks by ghostly killer octopuses, thirsty for blood, all night long. No big deal. The gameplay is very similar to that of classics like Zombies Ate My Neighbors and Smash TV, with the difference that Night of the Cephalopods is a pretty short game. The number of levels is small and you only have one weapon, although it's more than enough to last the whole night. The strongest point of the game is that you hear the character's narration in first person throughout the whole adventure, announcing how he's running out of ammo, telling you where exactly he is and what he thinks about the place you've just visited. Night of the Cephalopods is a really fun action game. Besides offering a bit of novelty, it lets you use the Xbox 360 controllers, which is greatly appreciated in this type of game.

But there is another important part: you'll need to share supplies with your partner and help each other out. Survival necessitates collaboration. That means sharing ammunition or rescuing your partner when they are grabbed by a giant squid. If you expect to win, you'll need to work together - if not, your game will not last long at all. Cephalopods Co-op Cottage Defence is a fun action game with some unique aspects thanks to its cooperative features. Best of all, you can play the game using an Xbox 360 controller, so that two players don't get too cramped using the same keyboard (although that is also an option).

Fragment is a first-person action game where you play a mysterious character trying to escape a spaceship. Unlike the usual in games of this sort, you’ll be armed not with a firearm, but with some very special powers. Your character has two main powers. The first is very simple: it lets you disintegrate any enemies relatively near to you by simply bringing your hand close to them. That simple: you approach the enemy from behind and disintegrate him. The second power, the more original one, lets you create clones of your character which you can then control. The most useful thing is that you can create these clones anywhere you look, meaning you can reach places that would normally be out of your reach. With this combination of powers, and being very careful to avoid getting killed by enemies (two shots and you’re dead), you have to try to escape the spaceship that they obviously want to keep you inside. Fragment is an excellent action and puzzle game that’s reminiscent in many ways of Portal, which is really saying something. Even at the technical level it’s outstanding.

Frozen Masquerade is a two-dimensional fighting game where up to four human players can face off simultaneously. However, you will need enough gamepads (preferably from Xbox 360). The game's combat system is rather unusual, since it uses a game mechanics that lets you regain life by parrying and wounding your opponents. As a result, Frozen Masquerade allows spectacular comebacks when you have very little life left, which is particularly gratifying when there are several players. Visually, Frozen Masquerade is a spectacular game. The eight playable characters are exquisitely designed, and the six different settings in which you can fight are gorgeous. Everything is perfectly drawn by hand, with spectacular animations. Frozen Masquerade is a very fun fighting game whose only downside is that it's exclusively multiplayer, so you can't play alone. You need at least one friend to enjoy this addictive combat system.

Major Hertz is a third-person action game in which we control the the sci-fi future's most badass sergeant, who must single-handedly face an entire enemy army: soldiers, tanks, giant robots, everything. The point of the game is very straightforward: we have to advance in a straight line through all scenes, shooting nonstop at the enemies that cross our path. Best of all, we can activate a turbo to go faster, literally running over the poor soldiers that stand in our way. Thanks to our protagonist's special suit, we can also move through walls as well as the ceiling. This gives us much more space to move, dodge our enemies, and lie in ambush for them. Major Hertz is an entertaining third-person shoot-'em-up game that offers a gameplay that is quite typical but rare to find in a free game.

Kavinsky is an action game in third person starring the artist of the same name. In it you have to clear the streets of corrupt policemen and thugs using your fists, then get in your car and drive at top speed down the highway. The game is divided into several stages that are completely different from each other. In the first ones you control Kavinsky directly, and can move him around the city streets, punching enemies that come your way. You can regain health by picking up tobacco and beer cans from the ground. Once you finish the street-fighting missions (where you'll even face a final boss armed with two axes), you have to drive the famous Kavinsky Ferrari. That's when you start the car-chasing missions, where you have to escape at top speed from the enemies coming after you while you break police barriers. Kavinsky is fast and entertaining action game. It's main strong point is the quality of the graphics, which are spectacular, with characters and car models that stand out from everything else. The soundtrack is also brilliant, and it couldn't be any other way.

Exitus is a third-person stealth and action game where you play an alien who, after being captured by humans and confined to a spaceship, must escape no matter what it takes. This alien, unlike most aliens, has no advanced weapons or superhuman strength. Instead, it has the ability to mimic other living beings. To keep from getting noticed, you have to assume the form of the humans you see on the way. For most of the game (which is not particularly long), you'll need to use stealth to pass watchtowers and sneak up on security guards, then disguise yourself as one of them. Exitus is a fun stealth game with an approach that's radically different from most games of this type. It also has excellent graphics, considering it's a free game developed by students.

Tagap 2 is a 2D platform action game that features two grumpy, and generally pissed-off, penguins called Pedro and Pablo. They must join forces in this game to face the hordes of undead penguins led by the evil Primo. Gameplay is practically the same as in the first game in the saga. You basically have to move through different two-dimensional scenes while shooting at practically everything that moves and trying not to get shot, too much. So you can defend yourself, as well as attack, you'll be equipped with a wide arsenal of all kinds of weapons, such as machine guns, grenades, shotguns, etc. Plus, you'll also have power-ups that will allow you to, among other things, create special shields. One of the most interesting things added to Tagap 2 is the option of being able to play co-op using a split screen with two people playing on the same computer. Even though most of the game is spent on foot, in some parts of the different missions you'll be able to use different vehicles which range from helicopters or jet-skis, to submersibles. Tagap 2 is a very fun action game which, apart from being completely free, also comes with amazing graphics.

Return of the Triad is a revival of the legendary mod Rise of the Triad. With it, you can enjoy the original game from the mid-nineties, now adapted for more modern computers. Best of all, it's totally free. Return of the Triad has all the elements that made the original game so popular: the same weapons, the same enemies, the same special modes, the same psychedelic scenarios with moving walls, and so on. It's all included. This version of the game has two campaign mode episodes with a total of nine different levels. You can also play in multiplayer mode either online or through a local network. Return of the Triad is a fun first-person action game. It has kept all the best parts of Rise of the Triad, now adapted for modern computers. You can also select higher resolutions and do some other fancy things that you couldn't do before.

Manos - The Revenge of Torgo is a 2D action game inspired on the movie Manos: The Hands of Fate, considered by many as one of the worst movies in film history. While the game's story is a continuation of the movie, its gameplay burrows several elements from the 80's classic, Splatterhouse, in which you had to control a student who was possessed by the mask of terror. This time around players, possessed by a similar mask as the one on Splatterhouse, will have to pass through different levels facing all kinds of enemies which range from common desert vermin, to dragons. The game comes with several difficulty levels and with the option of choosing between different masks and weapons at the beginning of the game. In order to win more of these ‘unlockables’, you'll have to advance through story and finish the game. Manos - The Revenge of Torgo is an entertaining 2D action game that, in spite of its clumsy gameplay, is actually very fun.

Discoverie is a first-person action game where the player controls a character who, armed with a crossbow, has to try to get out of a dungeon filled with strange creatures. The players will only have one weapon, the crossbow, but it has infinite arrows so you'll never have to worry about picking up ammunition or reloading. In its place, you go around shooting like crazy at practically everything that moves – although there are some creatures who are not hostile, of course. To get out of the dungeon where you're locked in you'll need a series of keys to open the corresponding doors. You'll find these keys behind paintings and other types of objects that you'll also have to shoot. Your hero starts the game with six lives and each time a creature hits you you lose one. If your life gets to zero... you have to start from the beginning, losing all the keys you obtained up to that point. Discoverie is a first-person action game with touches of 'roguelike' whose main strong point is its spectacular graphics. The lighting effects especially shine in a dark but very colorful voxel world.

Practically every aspect of the game is meant to provide a unique experience every time you play. Throughout the intricate levels of the game, you can find hand guns, machine guns, and rifles to use. You have to make sure to aim well, though; if you run out of ammo, you become an easy target for your enemies. Fortunately, you can escape and pass the levels without having to kill every single enemy. Roguelike FPS is an entertaining and almost never-ending shooting game. Plus, its spectacular graphics are influenced by the traditional ASCII-based graphics in classic roguelikes.

Way of the Blade is a 2D sword-fighting game that offers a not-very-common experience for Windows and does so perfectly, with a splendid presentation and more than memorable graphics.
