Sherwood Smackdown is a turn based strategy game in which players can take part in a series of battles set in a fantasy world where problems are solved using magic, and the blade of a sword. At the beginning of the game you'll have to choose between one of the two opposing sides: the good guys and the bad guys. In the first group you'll find a noble knight, an old magician, and a healer girl; while the other side has a dark warrior, a dark sorcerer, and a jester. Combat is turn-based and set on a scenario that is divided into squares. Each character can use a certain number of action points which can be split between his movements and attacks. For example, you could make a character not move and invoke three spells instead, or just make him move a lot. Before every battle you'll have to enlist the units you want to participate in it. You can choose if you want to take more knights than magicians, or more healers, etc. It’s all up to you. Sherwood Smackdown is a fun turn based strategy game with colorful graphics and a rather simple gameplay which will be very much appreciated by fans of the genre who are looking for something light to pass the time with.

Muamba Wars - Fight Against Piracy is a game focused on the concept of muambeiros, which are smugglers who try to cross the border between Brazil and Paraguay to sell their smuggled merchandise. The gameplay is the typical of tower defense games. You control the forces of order in Brazil, and try to stop smugglers from coming in, managing different units that you can deploy to defend your position. The available units are not that varied. There are policemen, special agents, and the military, who all shoot the same rubber bullets, just at different speeds. The more expensive the unit, the faster it shoots. Besides these three basic defensive units, you can also acquire barricades, which slow down the movement of enemy units; giant bombs, which scare away the smugglers; and even new columns to deploy more units. Muamba Wars - Fight Against Piracy is a pretty basic tower defense game, in which some more types of units are lacking, as well as some additional objective. As it is now, you just have to repel hordes of enemies without stopping.

Reprisal is a real-time strategy game that pays homage to certain aspects of the brilliant Populous by Peter Molyneux. In it, you'll have to lead your tribe of little pixelated people to victory. As you probably guessed, this means that other little tribes will have to perish. The way you control your tribe is through indirect orders. You can command various actions, but your tribe will ultimately do whatever they want. For example, you can order your citizens to be hostile so that they'll attack the other tribes they come across ... but you can't tell them to attack a specific enemy. Besides the different orders you can give, you can also alter the territory, creating forests, mountains, or bridges to connect different points on the map. Visually Reprisal is a lovely game, and everything is very carefully designed. If you love pixel art, this game is great eye candy. Reprisal is a fun strategy game. Behind its simple interface and relatively limited options is a wealth of complexity waiting to be discovered.

Deadbuild is a game that includes various elements normally found in realtime strategy with a 'tower defense' game, all of which is then mixed up with zombies. A typical tower defense game involves creating units and towers to stop enemies from arriving and attacking your base. In Deadbuild, however, this is just one part of the game. During the day, your mission is to use your hero and the different units you create to find resources and improve the landscape to your advantage. Later, when night falls, the zombies arrive. That's when you need to do your best to fend off their attack. And, to make things even more complicated, some of the special zombies don't come by the normal route - they take a shortcut. Deadbuild has an extensive campaign mode that allows you to choose between three different characters and follow an established storyline. It also includes battle mode, which you can play to instantly enjoy the tower defense aspect of the game. Deadbuild is a different tower defense, and an original and fun game despite its mediocre graphics.

Dungeon Door is a turn-based strategy game where you control a group of anthropomorphic adventurers: a panda warrior, a rabbit archer, a hedgehog wizard, and an otter thief. They are trying to steal treasure from a dungeon, fighting all the enemy creatures they meet inside. The combat system is turn-based and very similar to other games like Final Fantasy Tactics and Disgaea. Each character has its own abilities, strengths, and weaknesses. The warrior, for example, can block attacks to minimize damage. The wizard, on the other hand, can teleport from one place to another and cast harmful spells from a distance. The game has a fairly simple story with a very short plot, but it makes up for this with detailed graphics that show off the modeling and drawing of each character. Dungeon Door is a fun role-playing and strategy game that fans of SRPG will especially enjoy, given that there aren't too many options like this for PCs.

Alien Assault is a turn-based strategy game played in an overhead view. In it, players lead different squads of space marines in their fight against a relentlessly murderous alien race. The battles almost always take place inside spacecraft or other enclosed spaces filled with corridors and small rooms. These conditions are ideal for the aliens, who – despite their use of guns – are particularly lethal in hand-to-hand fighting. Luckily, the space marines have attributes that the aliens do not: discipline and sacrifice. The key to victory generally lies in the correct use of your units, including the willingness to sacrifice some of your men when necessary. You find several different types of unit in Alien Assault, each with its own unique advantages and disadvantages. Marines armed with flamethrowers, for example, are ideal for clearing out alien-infested rooms from a distance. On the other hand, units with power hammers may slow the advance of an enemy force in a narrow hallway. Alien Assault has five different campaigns with more than a dozen missions in each one. It also comes with tons of configuration options to leave the game exactly the way you want it. Alien Assault is an outstanding turn-based strategy game. Cleverly inspired by the legendary board game Space Hulk, it creates an almost-perfect gaming experience that fans of the genre will love.

Wargame Project is a turn-based strategy game set in an original fantasy world, where players take charge of armies and wage war against their enemies. The game features a single player campaign in which you can control different factions. Each of these factions has its own troops, so you'll have to learn how to make the most of your warriors, archers, knights, etc . The gameplay is very simple: in each turn you get a set number moves to move your troops around the map. You can do all sorts on the map, from interacting with other characters or creatures, to attacking forts. Where Wargame Project sets itself apart is in its combat system. When you go into battle with your enemies, the battles will be resolved automatically just by calculating the value of your troops, so you don´t have to do a thing. Wargame Project is a pretty standard turn-based strategy game, which besides having an interesting and entertaining campaign mode, also comes with a multiplayer mode using the classic 'hotseat' system, made popular by other titles such as Heroes of Might and Magic.

Dungeon Colony is a strategy game in real time where you take on the role of the Dungeon Lord, who has to try to explore the nearby caverns with the help of his loyal minions and, over all, save his dungeon from destruction. The game mechanics are relatively similar to those of Dungeon Keeper. The only difference is that, instead of controlling an omnipresent being, you can only control your demonic lord directly. Other than that, it's quite similar: your troops can carry out tasks such as setting traps, mining resources or attacking enemies, and they will receive a wage for doing so. You, on the other hand, can create all kinds of elements, as long as you use the appropriate materials and diagrams to do so. You can create things that range from torches to traps, including doors or shelves of books to teach your creatures. Dungeon Colony is an excellent strategy game with complex and very fun mechanics, as well as very nice graphics. In the end, it's like a modern version of Dungeon Keeper with some extra splashes of action.

Conquests is a turn-based strategy game along the same lines as Civilization; in it, players will put themselves at the helm of one of ten available civilizations and lead it towards world conquest...or at least to survive over the course of the centuries. Gameplay is almost identical to other similar games, such as FreeCiv or C-Evo, both also available on Uptodown. Basically, players have to build cities and manage them while taking into account factors such as population, labor, money, etc. Once a city is founded, you have to build different types of buildings or recruit units in order to continue improving. You will also need to build military units to defend your civilization from attacks from your rivals; or, if you deem necessary, to attack other civilizations with your units. You can thus occupy their cities and keep their resources. An average game on Conquests can last about ten hours, but they'll be ten hours of pure strategy in which you must take all elements from your civilization into account to make the most of them. Conquests is a truly fascinating 4X real time strategy game which will especially appeal to fans of the Civilization saga.

Micronations is a 3D strategy and management game where players have to build their own city starting basically from scratch. Once you've created a good network of roads you can start raising all types of buildings: different kinds of housing, leisure venues, shopping malls, farms, and offices buildings. You can build all these buildings and elements with just a click of the mouse. And maybe this is Micronations' main problem: that building anything new is no harder than clicking on a free space on the map. Micronations is a very entertaining real-time management game that also includes very solid 3D graphics. Its main problem is that it doesn't have well-defined playability, meaning there are no objectives for winning... nor any possibility of losing.

CaesarIA is a real time strategy game in which players build a Roman city from scratch and then go on to lead an empire to glory by fighting against barbarians, Egyptians and Carthaginians. Players start the game with nothing but the ability to build; and build you must. Building houses allows you to attract citizens, but in order to keep them happy (and alive) you need to create different types of buildings: guard posts, wells, amphitheaters, temples, and much more. You must build a true Roman metropolis if you want to survive. On CaesarIA you must remember to take into account several different key areas of your city. Houses for your citizens to live in are very important, but water and highways, for example, are also essential. That's why you'll have to build roads and aqueducts that connect your city’s most important points. During combat on CaesarIA you won’t give your soldiers orders directly; instead, you'll point to where you want your troops to go and they will, depending on their discipline, enter combat or do something else. CaesarIA is a free and open source remake of Caesar III that offers great gameplay and amazing graphics from the nineties which, even today, are still very nice.

Imperia is a turn-based strategy game that, despite its place in the 4X subgenre (alongside Civilization, Master of Magic, Age of Wonders), makes sure to add an additional X, and in doing so, becomes the first-ever 5X. The '4X' refers to 'eXploring, eXpanding, eXploiting, and eXterminating,' to which Imperia adds 'eXisting.' Why? Well, in Imperia players assume the role of a young intergalactic emperor who not only carries the full weight of humanity on his shoulders but also must deal with some personal issues of his own. Usually in this genre it's the player who controls a omniscient being who can do virtually anything. In Imperia, however, your main character has a limited number of administration points that he'll need to use wisely. Misdirecting your empire will not just destroy it, but might also mean that your character gets assassinated. Political machinations aside, Imperia players will have to manage entire planets. Their inhabitants' wellbeing, technology, agriculture, and culture... all of this depends on the decisions you make. Imperia is a turn-based strategy game with huge potential, and despite having somewhat crude graphics, it has an original concept that really brings something new to the table.

Dune II - The Maker is an open-source remake of Dune 2, one of the fathers of modern real-time strategy games. The original title came out back in 1992 for MS-DOS, so not only does it have serious compatibility problems on modern computers, but as usual, the native resolution of the game is very, very low. This remake will allow you to solve all that and much more instantly. Running Dune II - The Maker is as simple as unzipping the zipped file to any folder and double-clicking on the executable. Thus, without the need for installation, you can play on full screen with the native resolution you have set. You will not need anything else. Everything you need to enjoy the game is already inside the download. In Dune II - The Maker, you will have two different game modes at your disposal. On the one hand, in the campaign mode, you will have to complete the various missions that comprise the game's main adventure and follow (more or less) the book's story. On the other hand, you find the skirmish mode, where you can choose one of the many settings available and face the AI. Dune II - The Maker is a great way to enjoy one of the great real-time strategy games. Thanks to this version, you will not have any compatibility or resolution problems, or anything like that. Playing it will be as simple as unzipping and clicking.

Commander Wars is an open source turn-based strategy game that tries to translate the experience of playing the legendary Advance Wars saga to computers with Windows. And it achieves its goal with flying colors. This game features gameplay that's practically identical to the gameplay that made the Intelligent Systems saga so popular. You'll find tons of options when you create a new game. Creating a new scenario includes many variables, from randomizing the terrain's layout to choosing the number of opponents controlled by the AI that you'll fight against. So you can play either a 1v1 duel against the AI or a battle against four generals, each of which is represented by a different color. If you've ever played a game in the Advance Wars saga, gameplay in Commander Wars will be familiar to you. Your objective at the beginning of each game is always the same: capture the closest buildings, which will provide you with resources. With these resources, you can recruit more and more troops, which you can use to capture more land while also attacking your enemies. The battles between units also follow the same structure as Advance Wars. The success or failure of your attacks depends on several factors, including the position of your units (for example, if they're on higher ground, they'll be more effective) and their type (for example, mortars are especially effective against tanks). If you can keep all this in mind, you'll improve your chances of winning. Commander Wars is an excellent adaptation of one of the most beloved turn-based strategy sagas. The game is free and open source, supports mods, and features beautiful and colorful graphics which are openly inspired by the saga.
