ZDoom is an improved port for the official Doom source code. It is optimized to work perfectly with any Windows version later than 95, and adds some other improvements with respect to the original engine. It's important to remember that ZDoom is just an engine. In other words, this isn't the game itself. Instead, it's capable of running all of the games that use the Doom engine, like Ultimate Doom, Doom 2, Heretic, and Hexen, so long as you have their original files. Some of the most noteworthy improvements include support for higher resolutions, improved and expanded textures, free look (look up/down), and translucent objects. ZDoom is the best way to enjoy Doom. Whether you want to start a single-player campaign or jump into a multiplayer game with up to seven other players, ZDoom should be your go-to.

Agent One

Agent One

4 (831)

Agent One is a 3D action game where players control a top secret agent who has just a minute and a half to save the world. How? Easy: by beating both levels. To beat each level, you'll have to fight tons of enemies who want to shoot you or even kill you with their bare hands. Luckily, your character has the same guns as his enemies. That said, although you can use your weapons, the hand-to-hand combat is usually much more effective for getting rid of the bad guys. Remember you only have so much time. If the clock runs out, you lose... and the world ends. Agent One is a very short and entertaining 3D action game with surprisingly great graphics. It was single-handedly developed by an indie programmer in under 72 hours.

At the beginning of the adventure you wander around the village on a relatively quiet day, but the night time will be upon you. That's when you must make good use of the flashlight and the creatures, called 'strangers', will begin to appear on the scene. Additionally, the game has support for Oculus Rift, thanks to which you will achieve even greater levels of immersion. Grave is a first person horror game that is genuinely terrifying. Précipice

AkwaTeaks

4 (840)

Précipice is a first-person horror game openly inspired by 'P.T.', the Silent Hills demo with which Hideo Kojima and Guillermo del Toro surprised and terrified all PlayStation 4 players. In this obvious homage to the retired game by Konami, players can walk through very similar corridors and experience new horrors. The gameplay in Précipice is very similar to the P.T. original. That's to say, the player can only walk through the corridor, finding loads of details on their way that draw their attention. As you carry out small actions, other things will happen around you. It's important to keep in mind, however, that the controls are quite different from most that you are used to: 'Z' is to walk forward and 's' is to walk backward. On a visual level, the game's level of detail is practically identical to P.T., and it may even be better in certain aspects. All of this is thanks to the powerful Unreal Engine 3. If you have a powerful computer, and you can set the graphics to the maximum, you will enjoy a truly terrifying show. Précipice, just like P.T., is not just a horror video game but a playable terrifying experience. Walking from one side to the other, through a simple corridor, has never been so scary... And jump scares are 100% guaranteed.

Linley's Dungeon Crawl

N/A

3 (1077)

Linley's Dungeon Crawl is a traditional roguelike that follows in the footsteps of genre classics like Hack and Moria to offer a new adventure. Here, you have to delve into the depths of a dungeon to find the Orb of Zot. The problem, as with many roguelikes, is that once you find it ... you also have to get out. One of the first things you'll notice in Linley's Dungeon Crawl is the large number of playable races and classes. You can play as a human, elf, dwarf, troll, orc, or ogre, among others. Each race also has a series of special classes. For example, the trolls can be either warriors or berserkers. Linley's Dungeon Crawl is exactly what you'd expect from a game of this style: randomly generated settings, permadeath, and turn-based combat, all of which make for an extremely unforgiving game. All of this is behind a rather complicated interface that might take a bit of patience to learn if you're new to the genre. Linley's Dungeon Crawl is a great traditional roguelike that can offer a real adventure for anyone looking for a different challenge than what most games offer these days.

Maximus Action Carnage

Bruneras

2 (565)

Maximus Action Carnage is like having a free to play traditional arcade game inside a modern computer. It's as if the legendary Commando had travelled through time, arcade machine in hand, and crept up inside your computer. The game's story, which in this case is of no real importance, puts us right in the middle of the war between Japan and the United States. The hero Maximus, last surviving member of a squad of American soldiers, has sworn to avenge his former colleagues, and will not hesitate in taking out any Japanese soldiers who get in his way. The game's controls, as with all arcade games of the age, are very simple. With the cursor you move the hero around the screen, always having to move forwards, and with the other two keys you shoot your machine gun and, occasionally, throw grenades that wipe out everything on the screen. Carnage Action Maximus is not a simple or boring game, although neither were the arcade machines of the early nineties. Instead, you get a lot of fun and a real challenge, the game is quite unforgiving and will punish your mistakes ruthlessly. You can also leave your name on the leader board to show off in front of your friends later.

Crawl

Powerhoof

4 (731)

Crawl is a first-person puzzle and exploration game where you play a psychologist who navigates the twisting mazes of a patient's mind to find the cure and solution to his problem. The game is divided into a series of surreal and dangerous settings that can kill your (mental) health and force you to start over again from the beginning. The character moves block by block, just like in a traditional dungeon crawler, from which Crawl draws much of its inspiration. So you won't find levels, experience, or anything else. Instead, you'll find a series of powers. At first you can only open doors and chests, but as you move through the different levels, you'll be able to create shields and even attacks. The most striking part of Crawl is definitely the graphics, which take full advantage of Game Maker to make a provocative retro style. Crawl is an interesting adventure game with puzzles. Although it's a bit short, it's a very enjoyable gaming experience all the same.

Divine Frequency (Mod)

TheNewGenghisKhan

2 (648)

Divine Frequency (Mod) is a stand-alone mod for Doom that will let you completely transform ID Software's legendary game to the point that you'll find it hard to believe it uses an engine developed in 1993. What's more, unlike many other mods, which require the original Doom II files or having GZDoom already installed on your PC, you won't need anything else to start playing. As mentioned above, you don't need any additional files or other programs installed to start Divine Frequency (Mod). To start a new game, you only need to unzip the compressed file, which you can download from here, into a new folder. Then, you must run the file "Start Divine Frequency.bat". Doing so will open two windows— ReShade Setup and the GZDoom manager. With ReShade Setup, you don't have to do anything, as the window will just stay open in the background. In the GZDoom manager, all you need to do is double-click on the game's name. And that's it. You will be able to start playing. As soon as you open Divine Frequency (Mod) for the first time, you'll notice that any similarities with Doom are practically non-existent. When you start a new game, you'll find a completely different interface with a different character. In the upper left corner of the screen, you can find your mysterious avatar's icon and their health points, energy bar, and armor level. In the upper right corner are your kill points, which you can get by destroying enemies and will allow you to level up the three main skills in the game. Then, you can see your inventory shortcuts in the lower left and lower right corners, with the grenades and ammunition you have equipped. It's tempting to start shooting as soon as you can control your character, but Divine Frequency (Mod) isn't just any regular mod, and ideally, you should start by opening your inventory. From this window, not only can you take a look at all the items you start with, but you'll also see how much weight you're carrying (there is a limit), and, most importantly, you'll be able to consult the Codex. You can inspect all your weapons from the Codex, which is very important given that each one has special attacks and is particularly effective against a specific type of enemy. You'll also find the Bestiary, which, again, will inform you of the monsters' strengths and weaknesses. And finally, you'll be able to read any messages your character has received. Only by reading these messages can you understand the game's story well. Although Divine Frequency (Mod) is a first-person shooter to all intents and purposes, the influences of the Dark Souls saga and, more specifically, Bloodborne are undeniable. And this translates perfectly to combat. The enemies you encounter throughout the game are highly dangerous, and if you don't know how to fight them correctly, your game will most likely end prematurely. That's why you have over half a dozen weapons and grenades right from the start— you will need them. Learning to use all your tools of destruction is key to survival in a world where the slightest mistake can end you up in pieces. This is especially true with the bosses, who will test your skills and, probably, your ammunition reserves, too. Download Divine Frequency (Mod) and enjoy a brutal gaming experience halfway between the classic Doom, which gave us so many good moments in the 90s, and the impressive Bloodborne, which did the same in the 2010s. This is an outstanding game that will delight not only fans of Doom mods but also anyone who enjoys a good video game, whatever the genre.

The Castlevania saga, with 30 years behind it, includes dozens of games of various types, though there's a special place in the hearts of its fans for the 2D titles for 8- and 16-bit consoles (as well as Symphony of the Night and the DS/3DS games, obviously). Castlevania Fighter brings together the most popular characters from those games to face off against the games' most iconic villains – or against each other. The game, developed with the MUGEN engine, is a complete fangame that's covered even the most minimal details. As you'd expect, the arcade mode has you running through maze-like settings, except you have to face a sequence of difficult monsters using your own agility and the special moves for each character. As this is at heart a fighting game, it lets you play all 28 available characters, among them several illustrious members of the Belmont family, in the inevitable versus and training modes as well as a cooperative mode where you face the end-of-level villains in pairs. Castlevania Fighter is a game made by fans and for fans. Guaranteed to elicit a smile or two from all the vampire hunters out there who've spent decades enjoying those top titles from Konami.
