Pause Ahead is a two-dimensional platform game where you control a ninja who needs to reach the end of each level. The problem? The majority of levels are impossible to finish if you're only using the jump action. The solution? Use the pause button. In Pause Ahead, the game's pause button allows you to stop everything that's happening on the screen, except for the movement and momentum of your character. That means that the saws will stop spinning and the pincers will stop snapping, but if your hero is in the middle of a jump when you hit pause, he'll keep going up until he hits the roof. To make things even more complicated, you need to complete each level within a time limit. This is pretty complicated at the beginning, but as you progress through the game, it somehow gets even more impossible, and you'll find yourself using the pause button constantly. Pause Ahead is a notable two-dimensional platform game with original gameplay that requires you to be very, very skilled if you want to get your hero to the end of the game safe and sound.

Of Light and Shadow is a two-dimensional platformer in which players have to control two characters at the same time: Dr. Shadow and Mr. Light. And you will have to do so, as the light will kill Dr. Shadow and the darkness will do the same to Mr. Light. In addition to this 'small inconvenience,' there's the fact that Mr. Light can run and jump, as you find in traditional platform games, while Dr. Shadow can only walk... Though he isn't affected by the laws of gravity and will always stick to the ground. Of Light and Shadow is a platform game that includes puzzle elements, and it not only has a very original and fun gameplay, but also has very good graphics as well as an interesting story starring two charismatic characters.

Dracula 13 is a 2D platformer with a gameplay very similar to that of the legendary Super Mario Bros. In this game, you play the protagonist from Splatterhouse, Rick, in an adventure that's completely unlike what you've seen before. Though you still have to kill enemies, this game is focused more on platforms. As in Super Mario Bros, you have to jump from platform to platform, taking care not to fall and die. There are other dangers, too, like enemies you can kill with different weapons. At first you only have a knife you can throw, but later you can use a kind of carnivorous plant to kill any type of enemy. Dracula 13 is a fun platform with touches of action. It takes the best aspects of two excellent 16-bit era games and combines them to create a fun game with lots of character ... and blood.

Nubarron is an adventure and platform game in 2D in which you control Nubarron, a gnome that had his hat stolen by an evil orc. His mission, obviously, is to recover the hat from the thief, who lives in a castle outside of the forest. The gameplay is in between traditional Super Mario Bros games and the Castlevania saga. This means that a good part of the game is a platformer, although there is also time for action, including fighting against giant bosses. In the beginning of the game a dark cloud follows you around, representing the bad luck the main character has. This means that you have to constantly dodge the lightning strikes it generates if you want to survive. Nubarron is a pretty difficult and fun platform game in 2D with excellent graphics. The game includes lots of achievements that expand the content you can play with.

Inkling

Inkling is a 2D platformer where you control two characters simultaneously – one is a boy made of shadows, and the other is a young ghost who's willing to help him on his adventure. You control the boy with the keyboard while using the mouse for the ghost's special power, which lets you create a sort of trampoline for the boy to jump in any direction. You need to have good coordination to use the ghost's special skill while simultaneously moving the young man. Once you get the hang of it, you can create platforms in midair to keep jumping along. As you advance in Inkling's story, in addition to passing the levels, you also need to rescue other boys that are locked up. To do so, you just need to get to where they are. Inkling is a 2D platformer with an entertaining gameplay and noteworthy graphics. Plus, the game has a dark yet charming ambiance that fits perfectly with the story.

Plunger Lunger is a retro-style 2D platformer where you can use a type of grappling hook (in the shape of a plunger) to hang from different platforms in order to swing from one side to the other and get to places that would be inaccessible if you just jumped normally. The goal of the game is to try to get to the end of each of the levels as quickly as possible, something that you will need all of your skills to accomplish. Not only will you need to move your character quickly, but you will also have to move your mouse very carefully. Not only does Plunger Lunger have more than ten quite complicated levels, but it also is worth playing more than once thanks to its system of playing against the clock and thanks to the leader boards that allow you to try to do better each time you play. Plunger Lunger is a platformer with an excellent retro esthetic that will remind you a lot of Super Meat Boy. It's an excellent free game that has straightforward, entertaining gameplay.

Flood the Chamber is a 2D platform game where you control a character who has to escape the depths of a dungeon that's started to flood. Players face a huge and trap-filled dungeon that does not forgive a single mistake. You need a lot of speed as you go up, since the water level rises slowly but steadily, and will kill you if you get covered in water, meaning you have to start over from the beginning. Apart from speed, Flood the Chamber requires a good dose of skills and accuracy, since most of the jumps are really hard to make. So much so, that one of the first games that this reminds you of is the (terribly difficult) I Wanna Be the Guy. Flood the Chamber only has one, immense, level, which you have to beat in a single sitting. That said, the game can last a lot longer than you think, since its difficulty level will probably make you start over several times.

Journey to the Center of the Earth

Journey to the Center of the Earth is a two-dimensional platform game where you control a small explorer who is trying to dig up lost relics and reach the center of the Earth. Your hero can only perform two actions: jump and throw bombs. So you need to figure out how to use these two actions to solve all of the puzzles in the game, and find all of the hidden treasure along the way. You can't die, so you don't have to worry about that danger, since the only bad thing that can happen is that you lose a few seconds unconscious on the ground. However, those lost seconds can be a big problem for players trying to beat Journey to the Center of the Earth in the fastest time possible. The game displays a timer at all times, so you can keep track of your best attempts. Journey to the Center of the Earth is a fun two-dimensional platform game with charming graphics. Even though it's a short game (you can finish a round in less than five minutes), you'll undoubtedly play for much longer.

Most of Robbie Swifthand and the Orb of Mysteries is a series of puzzles where you try to collect orbs and use them to open doors to advance. To do so, you'll have to collect orbs from the ground or altars and throw them against the vortexes that open doors. But it's not as easy as it sounds. You'll encounter dangerous obstacles like things falling from the ceiling, spikes coming out of the ground, and swinging axes that can cut you in half. Robbie Swifthand and the Orb of Mysteries is a simple 2D platformer with elements typical of the genre. Overall, a solid game with quite good graphics.

The Rise of Magus

The Rise of Magus is a 2D action platformer where you play Magus, one of most memorable characters from Chrono Trigger, and star in his story prior to the events that take place in the classic Super Nintendo game. As in many other games of this genre, you gain skills and abilities as you advance in the story. In the beginning, for instance, you can only use the sword for melee attacks, but then you'll find the character's classic scythe in one of the first missions in the game. Likewise, you start only with the fireball spell, but soon enough you find the rest of them, with which you can face all the enemies you find. Magus can perform lots of different special moves. You not only move through the setting, but also slide, do double jumps, and even glide in the air for a few seconds. The Rise of Magus is quite a fun action platformer. Fans of Chrono Trigger will particularly like it, since it shares characters, locations, and plenty of enemies with that original title.

Barbarians And The Necromancer's Tower

Barbarians And The Necromancer's Tower is a 2D platform and action game where players control a barbarian who has to sword-fight his way through an evil necromancer's castle. The game is very similar to the first two titles from the Castlevania saga. In fact, the gameplay and graphics are almost identical. As you go through the castle, you'll find upgrades for making your sword bigger, or for getting other weapons like knifes and axes – that is, practically all the same objects you can find in the Castlevania games. Barbarians And The Necromancer's Tower is just as difficult as most other 8-bit games. Players have to be very smart to make it through the castle without letting the swarm of enemies that live there (skeletons, golems, bats, etc.) kill them. Barbarians And The Necromancer's Tower is a very fun platform and action game that fans of the Castlevania 8-bit games in particular will enjoy. A proper homage dedicated to veterans of this genre.

Final Sight is a simple platformer where you play a camel who, using her camel weapons, has to fight an evil creature threatening to kill all forms of life on Earth. The gameplay is really simple. The creature with the giant eye moves slowly upward, making the ground disappear. Your aim is to go up with it, while you try to make bombs that fall from the sky bounce off your hump and hit the giant eye. When you get five bombs to hit the giant eye, you win the game. This isn't easy, though, since controlling the camel can be a bit imprecise, and a single slip can make you fall into the void. In which case you obviously have to start over from the beginning. Final Sight is a really simple and entertaining platform game. The crazy idea behind it, as well the graphics, are its two strong points.

Fire Point is a two dimensional platform game in which players control a firefighter that has to try to rescue all of the people trapped in a series of burning buildings. In order to do so, you can use a number of different elements. The truck's fire hose will be good, but the folding ladder will also help you enter high windows and get to places that seem inaccessible. You can also interact with objects inside the buildings, including fire extinguishers and the very people (or animals) you have to rescue. In fact, you might have to grab the people you are trying to rescue and throw them out of the building. Fire Point has simple but effective pixelated graphics. It doesn't stand out for its technical aspects in general, but it is still relatively attractive. Fire Point is a platform game with some very fun puzzle touches, and it has a firefighting theme that isn't very common in the world of video games. In addition, it has a number of hilarious references to pop culture or other video games.

The game story basically tells of how a meteor strikes the Earth, unleashing a toxic cloud to the atmosphere that turns almost all living beings into monsters. You, one of the few survivors, have to try to make your way through this desolate world to find a camp of survivors where you can take refuge. In The End of the World - Remake you have to move forward through a 2D wasteland plagued with zombies and other creatures of the night. In the beginning you have only a knife to defend yourself, but soon you can pick up a handgun and other weapons. In any case, facing off against all the monsters is not an option in The End of the World - Remake, since there are much more of them than you and they're much stronger too. The End of the World - Remake is a 2D platform game with some action elements thrown into the mix. The combination of gameplays together with the setting make this game a super interesting experience.

Artilerry F is a 2D platform and action game that follows the gameplay of Castlevania and Metroid, and allows you to explore lots of levels while fighting enemies and finding new powers. The game's story puts you in the role of Artilerry F, a young woman who travels to the mystical mountains in search of power. In theory, this power is her birthright, and so as you progress through the game, defeating enemies and gaining experience, you can go up a level and gain new powers. You don’t just have to jump from platform to platform and fight enemy robots in the mountains; you can also talk to other friendly characters, buy objects, use potions, and ultimately manage your inventory. It's also vital that you learn to use the new spells you find, as some of the more advanced enemies in the game cannot be killed with normal attacks alone. Artilerry F is an outstanding Metroidvania developed with GameMaker. The anime styling and meticulous graphics, together with its gameplay, put it on the same level as games like Cave Story.

Excavatorrr 2 is a two-dimensional roguelike platform game where you have to dig as deep as you can in a randomly-generated mine while trying to collect as much gold as possible. You'll start up on the surface and use your pickaxe on blocks to begin your descent. Blocks of soil don't give you anything, but blocks containing gold gives you money. Other blocks, like those of stone, are impossible to break up. During your (typically short) adventure, you'll come face to face with tons of different enemies. Ghosts, for example, can become intangible for a few seconds, and therefore impervious to your attacks. Goblins, on the other hand, will attack you in a much more direct way. The levels in Excavatorrr 2 hold all kinds of interesting objects. Some can be used to activate special powers while others, like the coffins, can be kept in your backpack so that you can open them later on when you've found the correct key. Excavatorrr 2 is a difficult, addicting platform game.

The Night Before Christmas

The Night Before Christmas is a simple, entertaining platform game where the players control Santa Claus, whose mission is to deliver all of the Christmas presents to the children that have been good. The players have to collect the gifts scattered around the scene and take them to the Christmas tree. On the way, they have to pick up milk and cookies to replenish their energy and send all of the children who are awake back to bed. The fun thing is how you send the children back to bed: using a taser. You have to shoot them with your ray gun to make them go back to bed quickly, because if not they could discover you and end the game. In each of the levels you have to leave more and more gifts. At first you only have to deliver four gifts, but it won't take long before you have to deliver many more while you struggle with half a dozen kids. The Night Before Christmas is a fun platform game that gives you the chance to walk around in Santa Claus's boots for a few minutes. You never would have expected Santa Claus to carry a ray gun... but he does.

You only have three hearts (lives), and if you lose them you have to start over. Fortunately, the game is relatively short, so restarting it from the beginning won't take you more than 5 minutes. Snowbrawl in HELL is a traditional platformer, with simple yet charming graphics, and a gameplay that lets you jump and swing, but little else besides that. It's a short, straightforward, old-school platform game.

But to do so, you must survive a series of enemy-infested levels littered with traps. Some enemies, like goblins, are relatively easy to kill with a few hits of your sword. Others, like the skeletons, exist to make your life difficult. You will find some upgrades as you advance through your adventure. The first improvement, for example, is a helmet, which makes your little squire appear much more aggressive. At the end of the first level you'll face off against a goblin shaman, who will use his magic to give you with a much more difficult battle than anything you have faced thus far. Nightmare Night is a fun two-dimensional platform game with charming retro graphics. It's sure to please fans of old GameBoy platform-based adventures.

WizardWizard is a platform game in 2D in which you control a mage that has to rescue the princess of the kingdom, who has been turned into stone and kidnapped. Or at least that's what he thinks. The main problem with the protagonist is that he can't do any spell, so you have to beat all the levels exclusively by jumping. In fact, the only button you can use besides moving left and right is the jump button. In WizardWizard there are more than 20 levels, although all of them are pretty short. The good thing is that it follows the line of Super Meat Boy and VVVVVV, which means that it's a really difficult platform game. It would be normal for your character to die at least a hundred times before you beat the game. WizardWizard is a platform game with a really fun gameplay and a really funny story. In short, it's a charming game with excellent retro graphics.

The Lost Vikings is a puzzle and platform game in 2D that appeared first in 1992; more than 20 years later, Blizzard Entertainment has decided to distribute it completely for free. In The Lost Vikings you control three different vikings, each of them with their own special abilities. Your mission is to escape the clutches of a mysterious alien race that has kidnapped you and your clan, and then go back home. Thanks to the different skills that the three main characters have, you can face all the challenges in each level. One of your vikings, for instance, can attack with the sword and the bow; while the other can run and jump. It's important to have in mind that you can't control the three characters at the same time, so you have to alternate them, and use them by combining their abilities. The Lost Vikings was an excellent puzzle and platform game when it was first released, and it still is now that it is free. Besides, the emulation through DosBox, which is incorporated in the file, is almost perfect.

Spelunky SD

Spelunky SD is a remake of the classic Spelunky game with some new changes, the most important being the online cooperative mode. When you start a game in Spelunky SD, a window will ask if you want to start a solo game, host a game, or join an existing game. To start the cooperative mode, just create a new game or have your friend do it, and then both join. The gameplay in Spelunky SD is practically identical to the original. This means you have to try to get to the end of dungeons full of spikes, snakes, giant spiders, holes, and much more. And if you die, you have to start over from the beginning no matter where you were. Spelunky SD is excellent news for Spelunky fans. It lets you keep enjoying this game, essentially the same as the original, but now with friends via the Internet.

L'Abbaye des Morts

L'Abbaye des Morts is a 2D platformer developed by Locomalito, inspired by the classics Manic Miner and Jet Set Willy, and heir to Spectrum ZX's visual style. In L'Abbaye des Morts, you play the monk Jean Raymond who, fleeing from crusaders, finds shelter in an old church, not knowing that inside he'll encounter much more terrible dangers than some simple knights in armor. On paper, the gameplay is very simple, since you'll just have to use the direction buttons to move your character one way or the other and to crouch, and another button to jump. That said, the game, honoring its visual style, is as difficult as the classics that came before it. L'Abbaye des Morts is full of all kinds of dangers: bats, skeletons armed with bows and arrows, demons, ghosts, giant spiders, dragons ... even a drop of water could kill you. Luckily, players will also find hearts (which give you more lives) scattered throughout the abbey as well as other important objects that you'll have to pick up in order to advance. l'Abbaye de Morts is an outstanding 2D platformer that, like most Locomalito titles, offers a traditional high-quality playing experience.

Ascent

Ascent is a 2D platform game where you control a small forest spirit whose objective is to climb to the top of a giant tree. But what your hero doesn't know is that the tree is infected with a fungus that's consuming it from the inside out. The game mechanics are very traditional: you can move your character left, right, and jump. You can also use a special button that will let you throw seeds. When you shoot one of the seeds at a green surface, it can grow into a mushroom or a root. The mushrooms help you jump more, while the roots serve as platforms. In Ascent there are only two relatively short levels that you can complete in less than half an hour. Although both levels have very difficult parts, luckily, you'll find 'checkpoints' scattered throughout so the game doesn't get overly frustrating. Ascent is a platform game with very nice graphics (courtesy of Unreal Engine) and a pretty good control system. However, it's better if you play with an Xbox 360 controller.

SDLPoP

SDLPoP is a free and open-source version of the legendary game from Jordan Mechner, Prince of Persia, which is one of the most influential action and platform games of all time. In this version, you can play from the first level, in which your blonde character picks up his sword, to the last level in which he has fight the same evil Jaffar. The gameplay in SDLPoP is exactly the same as the original game. With the cursor, you can move your character from one side of the screen to the other and also jump, while with the 'shift' key, you can walk slowly and lunge when you have your sword drawn. If you're curious, SDLPoP is based on the unmounted DOS version of Prince of Persia. This is because, if you've played Prince of Persia on Snes or Mac, you might remember that the graphics weren't that great. On each platform, the graphics look slightly different. SDLPoP is a great way to enjoy one of the best video games of all time in a convenient way. All you have to do is unzip it, double click, and start playing.

Reflex Master is a rhythm-based game that tests the reflections of even the most experienced players. Get through all three levels in Reflex Master, each with its own soundtrack. Difficulty increases, but its your aim to avoid collision with any of the hundreds of obstacles put in our way. Controls are simple. But you'll need a lot of practice in order to truly dominate. Tap once on screen to head upwards, then double tap to go down -- you know the drill. Oddly enough, to stay in the same place you're going to have to tap as fast as you can. With its catchy tunes and frenetic gameplay, Reflex Master ranks among top tier games like Geometry Dash. But it offers a twist on typical gameplay, this time around you have to really get into the groove of the music to actually make it to the end of each level.

In the Windows platformer Happy Blocks, you'll have to guide a endearing little cube though all kinds of scenes... and try to keep it away from deadly spiked traps! This platformer has super simple controls: just move your block with the arrow keys, while using the spacebar to jump. The challenge is that there's loads of spiked traps throughout the levels, and you simply don't know which blocks hide them! This game is a perfect example of trial and error, as you have to try different paths to figure out which blocks hide razor-sharp spikes, and avoid them later. By figuring out which blocks are actually traps you can continue on the journey and beat levels! Happy Blocks is a simple -but very entertaining- game that actually becomes quite addictive as you play. Help the cute cubic character avoid dangerous traps and beat all the levels!
