Cubex is a game that gives you a virtual version of the classic Rubik's cube in 3D. Any fans of this popular puzzle can now have an electronic version on their computer to play at any time. Every time you open the program, the cube is exactly as you left it the last time you played. Concentrate and choose your moves wisely to solve it as quickly as possible. The game's interface is pretty simple. First and foremost, you see a big cube ready and waiting to move as you wish, and four small buttons in the upper left part of the screen. The first one will start a new game, the second will move the entire cube around randomly, and the next one will undo the last move made, while the last one offers more difficult challenges. Choose from cubes of up to seven by seven and put your brain to the test. To move any row in Cubex, you just have to use the mouse to click on it and rotate it to the position you want. To complete the puzzle, you can move the cube around to see all the sides. To do so, just click outside the cube and spin it around until you find the side you want to look at. With Cubex, you can have hours of fun solving Rubik's cubes that are as complex as you want.

Remember Frogger? That game where you played a frog who had to cross a highway full of cars? Well, now you can play something similar with a Christmas twist. You still control a frog but now your aim is to try to get to the gifts found at the top of the screen. To get them, you'll have to cross an increasingly busy road, and that done, you'll then have to cross a river by hopping from rock to rock and dodging flying gifts. Once you make it to the shore, you just have to head towards the gifts to continue to the next level. Sounds easy, right? The first levels are pretty easy, actually, but as you progress the traffic gets worse and the number of flying gifts increases, making the game more and more difficult. This is a very addictive game with a great Christmas theme, including a special Yuletide frog and a holiday-themed objective, as well. For all these reasons, and because it's free, Christmas Super Frog is highly recommended.

The graphic engine of Doom was set as Open Source. That decision was taken by idSoftware because they wanted to offer all Doom lovers the possibility to create their own version of the game. Own version? yes, because it's just the graphic engine that is free, not the content itself. It means that you need a file called IWAD to play the game. Those IWAD files contain the music, graphics, sounds, enemies, weapons and more. Risen3D is a version of Doom that takes advantage of OpenGL technology to render the graphics. It can generate particle effects, models and high quality textures even better than the original ones seen in Doom. FreeDoom is a version of Doom you can play by using Risen3D, because they need each other: Risen3D is the graphic engine that supports all the power of FreeDoom and other similar games. Finally, configure lots of aspects of the game: mode, resolution, 3D sound, filters, skill and more.

The release of the Doom engine as free software by its creator, idSoftware, has allowed independent developers to create a parallel version that respects the essence of this classic video game. However, Doom’s engine is useless on its own; in order to play, you need a resource file called IWAD that contains all of the game’s data: textures, graphics, sounds, music, enemies, etc. The purpose of FreeDoom is to build a resource file from scratch that stores a completely new game. FreeDoom consists of 32 scenes and three difficulty levels, all completely original resources that don’t violate the rights of the author of the original game. However, FreeDoom is only an IWAD file, which means you need an interpreter to run the game such as Zandronum or PrBoom.

To explain it in depth depends too much on each player's individual experiences, so it's probably best that you just try it out and come to your own conclusions. As with the majority of games from Jason Rohrer, the graphics have a retro style with big pixels and coarse animations, perfectly communicating the message at the heart of this game without giving too much importance to the graphics. Gravitation is a fantastic experience that everyone should experiment with. Of course, the level of entertainment you'll get from it is not the same as a conventional video game. Instead, you'll get a gaming experience that is much more important.

Passage is an experimental video game developed by Jason Rohrer in which players guide a pixelated character through his entire life, which lasts around five minutes. Your decisions, which in many cases aren't particularly obvious, will determine the end of the game (and the life of your character). The controls in Passage are very simple: use the arrow keys to move your character. And that's it. You can move from left to right, as well as from top to bottom. The graphics, as usual, are pretty unattractive by today's standards, but if you've got more than 20 years of gaming at your back, they'll be all too familiar. Dragonfire is an enjoyable little game that will give you a good few minutes of frantic action just like the old days.

You're never actually part of the fight or control it in any way, and in the end, who wins depends on each character's stats and abilities, which are in fact just a result of the names you chose for them. This means the game uses an algorithm that, depending on the names you use, gives the characters different abilities. Some are as absurd as spitting or swearing, but some of the others include using dynamite. Six Shots of Whiskey is a very odd experimental game. Its graphics composed entirely of embroidery are without any doubt its main appeal.

Minesweeper is, quite evidently, a version of the classic arcade games that has always come with Windows and in which you use your wits to find where all the mines are located on a square and then deactivate them. Just like on the more traditional versions of minesweeper, this one also includes three difficulty levels with their correspondingly larger boards so that you can prove to yourself that you still have the required level of concentration to detect the position of all the mines; you'll need to have all your wits about you and be very careful in order to do it. The only new thing is that you can now change the pieces' appearance and the difficulty level. In fact, you can choose between three levels, each of which has a different difficulty level. The more difficult the level, the more quickly the pieces fall, so you can try to get better the more you play. In addition, the game records your five best scores. Net Tris is a very fun game which is able to create a gaming experience which long-term fans will know how to appreciate, while still remaining faithful to the original design of Tetris. It is also an ideal way for little ones to try out one of the most classic games of all time.

It's a unique version that will surprise and delight you with its many colored balloons; instead of breaking brick walls, you'll have to make the balloons pop.
